Is using a fake name to register a visa gift card fraud / illegal?

Just wondering on this, not that its going to stop me... but is it considered fraud or otherwise illegal to use a fake name and address to register a visa gift card or similar throway type of credit / debit card? I'm not talking about one you have to send away for and shit but just one you buy at the store and register it on the phone... also not using someone else's info but just made up info

i do this all the time. works like a charm haha, well unless they go to the security cameras and trace you back.

haha no I'm not worried about that... but more like, say I had one of these cards on me and I got pulled over while driving or some other random off the wall thing happened where I got arrested while I had one of these, something along that line and they found out would this bring about serious charges for having one with a fake name? I don't think it would but just wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this

I assume you are ok. If you do get pulled over, you could say its your friends card you had from last night. as long as you don't have a fake ID with that same name, you should be fine.

If in USA, it depends on the laws of the state you are in. Several states have laws preventing you from using cards belonging to someone else, without their permission. However, if it is your card, though in another name, as long as you have no intent to defraud, you are fine. It just depends on which state.

In fact, it can be legal, or not, to get a full new identity, credit cards, etc, as long as you pay your bills. It becomes a crime when you use it wrongly.

Don't ask me which state follows which rules - that's a matter for an attorney (and a good one at that).

Sign a piece of paper saying you are both "Frederick Douglass" and "Jason A. FakeVisaNameHere" and you should be fine, if you're that worried about it. You may want to check out your local state laws on assumed names, of course.

Cookiestuffing, legal.. just against TOS.

You aren't gonna get in trouble for having a visa gift card with another name on it that isn't yours or anyone elses real info.. Now those pre-paid visas that are basically like bank accounts that require SS# and all that.. idk.. but the stupid little gift cards that require registration to buy things online no.. fake away.

@ifwearner first i didn't talk to you, second Cookiestuffing it's against tos so it's illegal
(illegal don't mean against the country terms only, could be against the sites terms too)
so if some sites hold your payment because you doing bh go to the lawyer to get your money back.
i didn't say that he shouldn't do it because of it's illegal and i know that will never get in problems because it's a small thing and no one will care about it but it's still illegal !!
(i know this thread will get first google result for the 'illegal' keyword, lol)

I buy no less than 10 visa gift cards weekly, register a name out of the phone book and use them online.

I don't think it is illegal, don't care really but I seriously doubt it.

I believe the issue is if you are using an alias versus using someone else's identity. If you use someone elses's real name & address, that could start treading into identity theft territory. I wouldn't go there personally. If it is just a made up name & made up address for your own privacy, you should be fine.

Yeah don't use real info out of the phonebook. Just pick a random name and grab a legit address. You don't want to use someones real info. Really no reason to at all and could have unwanted side effects.

dumbass breaking tos doesnt mean its illegal.. i could make a website and say you are only allowed to post in my forum once a day, if you decide to post twice its not illegal..

yahoo email allows one email per person, just cuz u have 5 doesnt make it illegal... ... if it were millions of people would be in jail now..
