Is topical authority more important than backlinks now?

Google values both depth of content and external signals - think of them as complementary.

Topical authority gets you backlinks in the end.

Focusing on content clusters and topical authority can really move the needle, especially in niches where the competition hasn’t fully optimized their internal linking and depth. Sites that cover a topic comprehensively with interlinked articles tend to rank consistently, even without aggressive link building.

Building out strong “content clusters” (pillar + related sub‑topics) can move the needle for SEO, but they don’t fully replace good link building.

I would say it works together. To have a lot of backlinks is not always good, Google prefers one backlink from a very known newspaper over a thousand backlinks from spammy websites.
