I have a niche site targeting for a few 3 ~ 5 word long keyword. The site has been doing good (rank 1~3) for the past a few years. But, starting from the middle of the last year. The site was outranked by two mega niche site (a site targets many niche keywords. it is like a site that contains a collection of the niche sites). Now, my site is always stuck at #5 for the main keywords it targets. Of course, I heard from many sources that nowadays it is easier to rank a mega niche site than a little niche site. But, I am still trying to figure why exactly happens. Recently, my site gets a guest post link from an authoritative site. According to ahrefs, its organic traffic stops dropping. But, the organic keywords keep dropping slowly.

I did some comparison between my site and competition. I would like get your opinion on it to potentially find out the real reason.

    1. My site has lower domain rating(~45) than those mega niche sites (~60). They have backlinks from many more domains(follow and nonfollow). Mine is around 90. The competition is around 500

    2. My site only has 20 posts while those mega niche sites have hundreds of posts.

    3. The trust score of my site(fresh index) is 20 or so. It is actually about the same as those from competition.

Any input is appreciated. If you need more info, you can let me know. Thank you.

You already explained the reason to yourself. You got stomped by an authority site. That's normal. Your site is super small and your competition has just as much KW relevancy and significantly more authority. You got owned by big players and there is nothing you can do about it at all. Unless you are willing to pour significant amount of money into that site, which won't be worth it most likely.

Yeah, I've been noticing this too.

Huge websites that have fuck all information about a certain keyword but happen to mention the keyword a few times will beat a smaller site with significantly better content.

I have also lost a few ranks to Amazon even though their products are OOS or have shitty reviews, as well as completely useless articles on "authority" sites which only touch on a subject.

    This ^^

Site like Wirecutter once they get involved in the niche your in will crush a small 5 page site every time.

You either need to build, build & build more value and & content into your site, sell it or ditch it and move on.

You got owned by the big boys. The original attention of having an authority site was to reduce the number of spammy sites. One method was to reqard sites with a lot of content. But a lot of content doesn't necessarily mean the content is relevant.

Yeah, like the Wirecutter bitch, have to say, their contents are way better than all niche sites, maybe Google think like this.

Yeah the way it seems to work is authority beats niche. Content helps establish authority. Content based on associated topics (and keywords) is what is needed. It's basically like a silo site beating a single keyword site - but where the outer silo has some really good content on it that Google likes and trusts (not a 150 word article spammed with the silo level keyword)
In local marketing - essp after Possum - a small site can thrive if Google believes it is for a specific local service . Outside that, big often wins everything else being equal.

Sadly, that is true nowadays. Several times, I have seen the the content from authority sites is pretty crappy. Yet, it ranks at #1. There gonna be some way around it...
