I'm not sure what platform you're using or any other technical requirement, but this is a host I can't recommend strongly enough: http://seohost.us/

It depends of how well optimized your website is. For example I run a website at hostgator with 40.000 visits a day on a simple 8 $ hosting. If you buy a vps you with 768 MB of RAM don't install Cpanel, it will eat around 500 MB of ram without doing nothing and there will be no RAM left for your website. Ask someone who knows linux to configure your VPS.
I hope this helped. Good luck

You can do 40k/day on that. It just depends on what the 40k a day is to, and your technical knowledge. If its 40k to a thing like Magento, X-cart, highly modified vbulletin or other resource intensive tasks then it will require optimizing. If its 40k to an html page, not an issue.

So, as long as you can optimize you're fine. Bigger numbers != optimizing.

I'd suggest using something like Litespeed, Nginx, Cherokee or another webserver along with a modified SQL database and caching system. You could also opt for some analytics of your server to determine bottlenecks in the software or the scripts.

The short answer is no. You can do all the optimization suggested and battle with it or you can spend a little more and not worry. To gather 40K uniques a day you're most likely doing something with video, images or downloads. This VPS isn't anything more than a shared host most likely over-allocated to being with. These containers are set up on the assumption nobody like you is going to purchase them. They are for simple and basic websites expecting 10-300 uvs a day.
