The last post on that thread they posted on was 2012...This was a tactic used yes i guess still works depending where you post and the kind of text on the post.

yea its a way to get a better forum link than a profile or a footer without drawing attention to yourself.

make a comment let it soak until the thread dies down and go back and edit it in.

Yeah I do this. Grab your keyword or a slightly more broad keyword and search for "[keyword] + forum", or look through your main keyword's results for any forum topics. Make a new account on the forum and quote a useful post within the thread and talk about how helpful it was and how you signed up with a new account just to thank them. And of course, drop a link in the quote somewhere. Most of the time moderators won't notice the link. I'm not sure how effective it is if you seek out forum threads in general related to your keyword, but my #1 priority is going through the SERPs for main keyword and longtails to find forum topics and posting there - instant link from top 100 result for your keyword, which is gold. You can try something similar with blog comments - basically, just look through top 100-300 results for your keyword and figure out if you can get a link on any of those results with this tactic or a similar one.

Why can't you just post the tactic here?

Regardless, any "old school tactic" can likely be recycled and still put in to some use today, with a little tweaking.

That's basically what they do.. pull up ahref reports from competitions and check on all the blog comments.. anchoring the keywords then repost. Still works!
