Is this a viable tactic?

My money site is a television show streaming service for a particular show, for the sake of argument let's say the Simpsons. What I've been doing is going around on Simpson/Cartoon related forums and posting topics like "What is your favorite character" and stuff like that while hyperlinking my money website into my keyword in the post. I've been finding a ton of websites that do not have rel=nofollow so technically I'm getting a free backlink from something directly related to my niche, correct? Is this a decent tactic to pick up a few backlinks or am I wasting my time with all the account creations I'm making? :p

That approach should be useful as long as it is done well. We do similar forum marketing.

If you put those forum posts together well, they can drive traffic on their own too. If 10,000 people see a thread you make, a few thousand may visit the link naturally and some may become recurring visitors.

The forum posts can show up on Google, too. For example, a thread titled "What is your favorite Simpsons character?" could end up on the first page of Google as well, especially if the thread you made got popular, which can then get even more traffic and be a stepping stone to your website.

So you can even try things like then pointing more backlinks at the "What is your favorite Simpsons character?" thread to:
    1. Help that thread rank higher in Google to be a better stepping stone and
    2. To pass link power through that thread and use it as a second tier for link building, which can increase the power of that link

SMM and SEO can work together. We have found that good/successful forum threads can be not just useful links, but also good ways of social media traffic regardless of how they affect SERP placement.

From what I understand nofollow links don't pass link juice, you can still get referral traffic from them but do follow links are the ones you should be making
