    Hi

For anyone who has done a lot of experimenting and has been in IM for a long time, could you please give your opinions on if Google keeps track of what the user searched for and then which websites did they actually click and THEN use this as a ranking factor for that website?

As everyone would know that they obviously keep track of this data but the real question is if they then use this for SERPs etc? Common sense would dictate that they should since it is a very powerful indicator of what their visitors want. What are your thoughts on this?

    Yes. It's called bounce rate.

yes it is a ranking factor, higher CTR in the SERPs could help you rank a bit better but its not like get 1,000s of click and increase 10 positions, get 100,000 click improve 100 positions.

When you're logged in, and not logged in, it'll consider two different factors.

When you're logged in, it almost customizes the search according to the results you clicked on before.

For example, say you're logged in, and you keep clicking on your own result, you will begin to rank higher in the SERP. But that's only for you.

When you're not logged in, it's more or less a similar concept, it's just not as drastic.

So for example, everyone clicks on your result, then you will progressively rank higher for that search. A little bit at a time.

It's been my experience and has also been mentioned by Cutts.

Take it for whatever this is worth as I always say that taking SEO advice from Cutts is like taking dating advice from women.

Yes, they've been doing it for awhile. It's becoming more and more a huge ranking factor. Social signals and user activity are going to be the ranking factors. Backlinks and the way they are used now are no longer going to be as big of a factor, just as page rank is not going to be. Anytime you start a G searching anything, everything you do and the sites you go to are tracked and the data is collected. A good example of this is say, have you ever G plus a site? If you search for something and that site comes up in the listing it will have something like this at the bottom of the listing "You +1'd this" or if you've visited a site it will say the last time you were at this site and also if you visit the site often, when you search for something that pertains to that site G will move that listing up to the top of the rankings and show it to you, but just for you. It does not mean that's the actual ranking of the site, but since G knows you visit that site they will move it to the top of the listings for you.

You can make it to page 1 of google but if you don't get any clicks the site is sand boxed. Regardless of your back linking strategy. Apply the same functions you see in adwords to those sites you are trying to rank organically. Don't want to give too much info away but if your experiments have lead you to this conclusion, I must say keep on "experimenting". This will lead you to greater wealth very soon ;-).

I think Google is starting to transition to this type of search results slowly. It should have a more drastic effect in the future as they gather more data, fine-tune and roll out.

This has been considered as one of the many factors for SERPS. The bounce rate determines it all. There are some services in Marketplace which deals with organic search engine traffic. You can check those services to get better idea.

:O Despite seeing it on a daily basis on my analytics, when I was posting this, I totally forgot that it is called CTR lol. Thanks though.

    Lol

I totally agree with you even more after 4th October since I only have one 'authority' website and it has taken a massive hit. Despite the fact that I had done backlinking very carefully and in a controlled manner, yet the rankings of most of my keywords have dropped from 1st page to 10+! It was already clear that they had to do something about this tiered backlinking. I dont think they can ever completely eliminate the weight of backlinking however it certainly seems that now it doesnt carry that much weight as it used just a few years ago. PageRank I think if i remember correctly G's patent is coming to an end this year or already ended last year, so it will be soon very useless for G. and given the amount of TBs of data they have for CTR, I think it is definitely one of the most important factors for ranking.

    Amen to that :)

    Home Page:
Few are minor factor, Few are major. i am sure google have over 200 factors.

yes my friend its one of the factor, but still not major factor. Links, on site seo , and now social are only major factors.

i also notice, if ur site get impression on 2nd page with some query, then relevant keyword for same user some time appear site on 1st page.

Visited links of 2nd page, also show next time on 1st page from same user query.

LOL . Dating advice from women. They know the exact answer but no idea how to get to it. I would think that the bounce rate and the visit is connected. It has been said many times however that having more vistors is a SERP factor.
