Is this a link wheel, or tier 1 tier 2 thing I keep hearing about?

    Alright guys,

I was just doing some research on a competitor in my niche. They're about 5th in the google rankings for the keyword I'm going for. I went to check their backlinks and it looks like they have 850. I then noticed that the majority of backlinks were on a page like /links_8.html, etc... So i clicked on a few of them, and they were just a page of links, like with a title "Cool links" and then lots of links with a little bit of text. They are pretty unrelated to the site.

Is this a link wheel? Or is there a name for this? Is this the 1st tier, 2nd tier sites I keep hearing about? Is there a way to automate this free blogs maybe? Create lots of free blogs, chuck some crappily spun articles on them (can all be the same niche), write 10 spun articles. Then churn out lots and lots of spun versions of the websites, you could probably get like 500 sites from 10 spun articles. Get them all ranking and link back to your main site?

This does not sound like a linkwheel, more like bought backlinks. It's pretty common to buy a link on a "resources" or "our favorite links" pages.

A tier 1 Web 2.0 backlink is an article on a site like wikidot, livejournal or hubpages. If you look at a backlink and it is on a site like these (where the content can be created by registering for an account and posting an article) and it has a link to a domain (the money site) and 1 or 2 links pointing to other Web 2.0 sites, that is a linkwheel.

A tier 2 link is usually a blog comment or forum profile with a link pointing to a tier 2 site.

But tier 1 and tier 2 sites can be interchangeable. There are no rules to this. You can use blog comments and forum profiles as tier 2 links and then build tier 3 links to them.

There are a few programs that will semiautomate building your linkwheels - SeNuke, Xgen, ... there all over this forum. You can even hire people in the buy/sell section that'll do it for you for a few bucks.

    Hi,

i have been told to do for my sites ( i run 4) the following things:

    1) create 1 tier of links to each site.
Does it mean then that i have to write 1 article for each site?

    2) create another layer pointing to the layer previously made.
Does it mean i have to post comments on blogs or create forum profiles linking to the articles previously created?

    3) create 1 final bigger layer of links pointing to all layers previously created.
What does it actually mean? How would i do this?

Noob questions i know but very important to understand the main concept.

Thanks to anyone who would help me to understand this. :)

    That sounds like link trades...
People just trade reciprocal links and throw them on a "links" or "partners" page
    Nothing to do with linkwheels

Oh i thought that was meant to be a sort of link wheel.

Do you believe it's a good startegy though for link building or link wheel is a step ahead this?

    Thanks!

    This is a Link-Wheel :

And This is a Tiered Link Structure:

    mininetpic.jpg

Notice how there is a first and a second layer of links? Well most people refer to such link structures as a Mini-Net...

What you described above is basically somebody doing link trading with other people, which is highly frowned upon and will most likely get you banned!
