Its late so bare with me if this is tough to follow...One day a BBB fraud alert pops on thousands of miles from my business saying I run this ".club" website because it links to a website I own--web links are all fake but if you look at the code it has all these fake links to me. This site then takes out ads on facebook basically bashing colleges and using their own pics to do it---so i start getting endless letters from lawyers. I try to tell these BBB people its not me and they just don't seem to care--in fact they telll me if i get reputation repair from a local person then they will take it down. Local person just so happens to be on the board for the BBB there in that city and wants 10k to repair the fake damage they had done. (btw i wish i was exaggerating any of this).

Anyways this .club site goes as far as to have an outsource call center that even answers the phones but they hang up on me whenever i call. Then this person starts posting thousands of reviews everywhere and even gets the local news station's attention. I could keep going and it does get worse and believe it or not this guy is mistaken---I didn't do what he thinks I did but he won't listen.

Is it possible this is all one person? Is anyone this amazing? I mean my life is a living he11 but at the same time I'm kind of impressed if it is him.

Also appreciate any PM's about what I can do--obviously willing to throw considerable resources behind getting this torture to stop.

If it is the reputation repair guy, that would be blackmail/extortion what he is doing, which is very illegal. Consider getting law enforcement involved if you're being framed and its effecting you and your business that much. I feel like theres more to this story you're not telling though.

I can certainly understand why you would think that. Thats one thing that never gets talked about in b school or in the media---just how dirty the business world is--but like I said I wish i was exaggerating or there was more to the story--I wish people with power didn't use it to squeeze money from those without it.

Which city is this clown in ?

It would be a lot cheaper to get him bundled into the boot of a car and driven up into the moorland to be ' educated ' in his ways.

    Yeah...

This seems like somebody is trying to frame you to buy reputation repair - unless you've made some hella competitive enemies.

Man, makes you think just how easy it is for somebody to frame you online. Mass extortion - let's say it costs them $500 (probably less) to run this campaign on each person they frame... 20 people and if one pays up they break even, but really there'll be more than 1/20 of them that take the easy way out and fess up $10k, after all it's ruining their business and they'll earn that money back over time without their reputation remaining ruined.

Something about this seems dodgy. It may be the local BBB guy is involved, after all, he's benefiting from this. Although thinking of it now, it could be a fucked up competitor, who knows they'll win either way...
    1. You don't pay $10k and your businesses' reputation is ruined, hence people go to his instead, OR...
    2. You pay $10k and now you have less of an advertising budget for your own business, putting him at an advantage + the time lost from running your actual business.
This is extortion and I'm sure it's illegal as fuck in most developed countries. If the person hasn't covered their tracks there'll probably be a way to lead back to him... IDK... maybe there's parts missing from your story as well. I don't have any advice to give you personally, so take this bump, with any luck somebody with experience will come along and help you if you really do need that help.

I've had lawyers do this to me to via a problem they locate in my TOS ...If you are incorporated you are not allowed to defend yourself and any lawyer in my area wants 15-20k before they show up on day one---if you pay the 5-10k the blackmailer lawyer wants then you get labeled a chump by their little wolf pack group and hit for other reasons--lot of laws out there--pretty easy to break a lot of them by accident in business--kind of thinking the only way to make it all stop is to shut down, leave the US and be a beach bum on an island is Malaysia

That definitely sounds like extortion. It would be hard to prove that it's the person is question though. There isn't much you can do except rebrand, unless you have a lot of $$$ to weather the storm.
