If there is any domain that is spammed alot, it will do more harm.. If you can get a new college, it will help you more.

If you mean, can one of those extensions be spammed & otherwise not worth it to use as a backlink? Absolutely. That can happen with nearly any backlink source.

Backlinks are inherently beneficial, you have to asses the each likh and find its pro's considering the quality, relevance, trust factors & natural linking.
