You pay to place your bid. Usually these sites raise the price by only a penny or so and charge you a dollar to place your bid. If you win you have the cost to place all your bids PLUS the cost of the winning bid. These companies I would presume make a killing off their bidders.
They don't make that much money. They have autobidders that place fake bids to keep the auctions running....till they meet their 'reserve' price.

Very smart.
A custom built one....the ones on the market suck. I've got a programmer that has built over a dozen of these sites, and he does very quality work. A basic one will cost you $2,000 and a couple months to build.

More on topic now that its here, i wonder how this guy did, if you ever made a penny auction. Wish I was creative enough to come up with a pennyauction idea.
I wonder what it would cost to start one.
