My IM has been quite halted lately.. well because.. I bought a house. When I was first house hunting, my #1 concern was getting a good internet, and #2 was a well priced house.

Well.. I was reassured calling the internet companies that I can get 25MB download. After buying the house though I discovered that I actually am unable to get it and there doesn't seem to be anyway of getting it in the future either.

Bummer... anyways.. so I'm stuck with 1.5MB download speeds. Ended up signing up for a second internet so the fam and myself can use the internet at the same time.

Do you guys have any suggestions for me? Like is there anything I can do? I want to upload Youtube videos... I was wondering if this would work: Like with my crappy 1.5MB internet connection if I were to signup for some sort of dedicated remote PC. Would I be able to remote into a computer that has faster internet and be able to actually use a faster internet?

PS. I forgot to mention my upload speeds are only 0.5 MB.

I feel for you man, have you looked into those internet hotspots? I mean they might be better than 1.5

That would be nice, but.. when I bought my house I got a really good price. I think the main reason I got a good price is because it's pretty much in the middle of nowheres(in the woods) lol Well I live like 5 minutes from a small town, and 25-35 minutes away from a bigger town and a big city.

There's not much around here. The messed up part is though I can get like 20MB per second on my phone.. but... here in Canada we have no such thing as unlimited bandwidth for cellphones. So then they end up charging insane prices for every GB of data you go over.

And I had people come out already for the LTE service and they basically told me I'm screwed there because even if I installed one of their hugest towers (which would cost like $600 or more), it still wouldn't be able to get over the trees around my property that are like 70 feet tall (or maybe more IDK).

So I'm stuck with the stuff that comes from the telephone poles. I even called them up and pleaded to them if there's anyway I can hand them a buttload of money (not that I'm super rich or anything...) and they install new lines or whatever they have to and asked about getting a quote and they told me there is no way that can be done and that it would be more likely to get fiberop out where I'm at, and they don't think that will be happening anytime soon since I'm not near the city.

You can get a dedicated server and put all your IM tools on it. You could find out if maybe the small town has better internet that you could get an office in.

get a vps.... just takes a small connect to get to that, then you have fast internet on the vps.

yes may be a shared place somewhere, a desk, in a small office, small private firm, small plumber or such, they even may be happy to have you....in

I have a VPS (Linux) already. But are you talking about a Windows PC that I could remote into or something? I guess that's kind of what I'm wondering if it will work. Whatever you're describing there, do you think it would work with Youtube? Like would I be able to install Mass Video Blaster and Mass Video Downloader and use them?

An office does sound tempting. They might have a little faster internet (like 7MB). But I don't think it will work out with the family being away from home so much.

Did you check to see if there are any ISP's in the area that deal mostly with business that has a fiber line running close by, you may be able to connect to?

You can get a dedicated server that uses windows

I've used these guys before and their service is really freaking awesome.

but when you connect to a server, you dont get the delay, as far is typing opening files etc?slower internet increase that? or not?

You can easly do something here ,
You got land well permission to put a huge pole up and then setup a huge arial for incomming networks , you will eventually find a network that offers a service thru the areial .

you can do the other, what was mention a satellite internet connection but there very expensive.

But saying that a massive pole and a good arial not cheap but can help easly.

You can try this cheap one

Best price done that for you

Or use a real pro one.

If you can do it and get a strong incomming signal you can setup the secound repeater to let others joing your network and charge them.

Well worth setting up, you are not on your own your get subscription ,i guess easly, or enough to receive free internet costs......

Maybe you was suppose to be in that New home to become the local hotspot for internet. connections, life works in strange ways......

If i lived near you it would be a fantastic project to serve the local community fast internet for a small fee.....

Lag will vary based on how far away server is so you can get one that is closer, also you can reduce the display lag by sending commands remotely or you can lower resolution and go to 8 bit colors.

What about Satellite Internet?

I saw a video somewhere where a family created their own rig as well. I'll see if I can find it right now.

Edit: Here it is:
I'm not sure about the legitimacy of the video (I never looked into it much), so take it with a grain of salt.

That's interesting lol I don't live that far out in the woods that I don't have power though hahaha But it's still interesting to watch that.

My concern from that video is: "Everytime I hook it up, I know it's not going to work". That's what one of the guys said, and to be honest, I think it's fairly true. I don't think they work very well. But... maybe that's still worth looking into though if they atleast have faster internet. I'm not sure if they do though.. I looked it up once when I first moved and discovered my internet sucked, but I forget the speeds and bandwidth limits. But I'm going to look it up again.

The company that provides the LTE service seemed to think that the towers they have wouldn't be tall enough. So are you saying I should just try to find my own way to make a taller tower? Seems like I'd have to go like 70-80-90 feet up possibly. And I'm not sure but don't those cables start to crap out after they get to a certain length or something?

Isn't satellite going to be too expensive and have too much lag to really do heavy work on unless its for connecting to a remote server?
Yeah.. I'm thinking so too. Like if it rains it drops out, or if it snows it drops out (and you have to clean the snow off of it). Plus the ping times are really high. But maybe I'll try checking out their speeds to see if it would make a difference. I mean.. it wouldn't be too bad like if I have fast internet SOME of the time atleast haha I can always switch over to my other internet when I want to. But... I just don't know yet if it's actually fast or not. Trying to look it up. It might also have a bandwidth limit too which would suck!
