...adding links and adding links and adding links to a site that's buried in the SERPs and not moving?

I overdid it with a new site, went from #20 to out of the top 1000 a month ago. I'm still building links to it, and seeing no movement at all --- obviously it was my fault, and I can't stop building now, but it's depressing to see it sitting in nowhere-land day after day lol

(Actually, there are a lot more depressing things than this - but it just is really annoying me at the moment ;) )

Well being stuck at 11 and not being able to budge over to number ten or more then sinking back to 30, then back to 11 for a bit then 16, now 19.

That also feels like shit :). I have given up hope on this bastard now.

Yeah, the page 2 thing is pretty bad - so is the #1 thing (i have lots of #1s without regular sales, but they're low $ keywords).

This is a pretty negative thread tho....

Instead we should be asking: what steps should we be taking to see MASSIVE success?

    Basic NLP yo :)

You should also try adding more content on a regular basis.

Don't give up on him! Theres lots of things you could try.. Try buying traffic to improve alexa rating. Also where is it ranking In other search engines? Also try pinging the site everyday.

No, it's a new site, definitely no SB/XR spam -- it's a mixture of profiles, edu, articles, link pushes.

Under the top 1000 in all engines.
Been afraid to ping the site regularly, it's still less than 60 days old and I'm trying to "quietly" build what I'm building now. Anyone else think pinging is the answer?

Pinging is not the answer; you are on the right track.

That's what I thought - adding content, adding links - and only slapping myself for being stupid once per day :D

That is your error right there; I slap myself at least 2X a day for being stupid.

Also, make sure you are targeting your inner pages with your backlinks.

Personally I focus on overall traffic not rankings. I couldn't care less whether I'm ranking for any particular keyphrase, because I'm too busy cranking out vast volumes of shit, spamming the fuck out of everything available and getting traffic for so many different keywords that it all evens out anyway.

Individual rankings don't pay the bills, traffic does!

Only one slap each day for being stupid. The second one is for being ugly.

And I am. (Targetting inner pages, that is.)

True in general terms - in the eternal argument of quantity vs. quality, quantity often wins.
Over the last 10+ years, though, I've focused successfully on quality more than quantity; old habits are very hard to break, especially when I knock a site up to #1 and see the money flow in that same day.

The point I was trying to make was not quality vs quantity but rather that agonizing over individual rankings is frequently a waste of time and energy. There are so many variables to consider that we rarely if ever know the true reason for fluctuations in rankings. For a given site you could try every trick in the book only to get no results - because, through no fault of your own, there happened to be a glitch in the Googlebot database on a particular day, or a router in the middle was screwing up, or the moon was in the wrong phase.

Also chasing high rankings is a sure fire way to get those big fluctuations in rankings that cause big fluctuations in income, which is something I don't like myself. Build big and build different and laugh at algo changes. :D
