Yes you are correct by editing your robots.txt file and htaccess file can hide your backlinks from your competitors

If you using wordpress a free plugin called "link privacy" will do the job.

If I understand correctly, you can use robot blocking by either using domain names or IP addresses.

Since you're trying to block your content from being seen by third party websites like Eventbrite and Wattpad, maybe you should add their IP addresses to your robots.txt file.

While you can block sites like ahrefs, etc., from your site, you cannot block them from sites you do not control. So in this regard, if someone really wants to know your backlink profile, they can find it.

You can block sites with htaccess as in the examples:
    Code:
    # ahrefs
    deny from 173.199.115.104
    deny from 173.199.115.105
    deny from 173.199.115.106
    deny from 173.199.115.107
    deny from 173.199.115.108
    deny from 173.199.115.109
    deny from 173.199.115.110

    Code:
    ## Mod_rewrite in use.

    RewriteEngine On

    ## change non www to www
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^somesite \.tld$ [NC]
    RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.somesite.tld/$1 [R=301,L]

    ##BLOCK BAD BOTS
    ## BLOCK BAD BOTS
    #RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^.*=(ht|f)tp\://.*$ [NC,OR]
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} .*AhrefsBot.* [NC]

    RewriteRule ^(.*)$ – [F,L]

This "hiding" is a request in the robots file and/or simply banning certain IPs. Problem is no matter how anal you are there are bots that don't say they're from Majestic/ahrefs/moz (or wherever) and are probably using new IP's. This isn't to say TRYING these methods is a waste of time if you want to hide links... but never think its air tight. Its simply a 'best effort' type thing, and you should always make your PBNs look as "real" as possible with quality content as your true safety net in case any should be reported.
