I got one domain at godaddy and have no intention to renew it so I simply left it alone and forgot about it, but just several minutes ago godaddy automatically charged me $18 and renewed the domain for another year.

And after checking the old mails I overlooked about a week ago, they did send me an automatic renewal notice, I know this is totally my fault leaving this option on, but is there a way to get my money back?

I don't think they're good about refunds but you should definitely open a dispute to try to get it back at least.

I've seen godaddy recommended here time and again, I wouldn't get within 100 miles of that registrar....

    short answer = yes

What you need to do is phone them, explain the situation, and they will credit you with refund amount.
If you cannot phone them, try the online help chat, just quote your PIN to the operator, and although you may see
the refund in your account, it may not hit your bank to some days later.

    Good Luck, and be optimistic.
