Please forgive my English. Months ago I and a friend paid an SEO company to handle building backlinks to our website. At first, it was a jolly ride, The backlinks started to work almost immediately because the website (a very large blog) was already 2+ years old then, there were visible improvements in ranking and traffic and everyone was happy. Fast forward to few months ago; we started noticing gradual drops in traffic, simple research showed there was a minor Google update, things were bound to fluctuate right? well, our website continued going downhill, Google console was all green, there are no penalties, but how can that be when contents ranking 1st position are no longer on the first page? We became suspicious of the SEO company and the sort of links they were building and decided to investigate as things hit an all-time low - traffic dropped from 20k pageviews a day to around 2k only. It turns out that this company was building really spammy backlinks, and Google has obviously noticed. At the moment we've hired someone to filter all the bad links (they're really big) so we can upload them to Google disavow tool, but we've just discovered a new issue, Google doesn't crawl and index new posts automatically anymore, we'd have to request to crawl the website from Google console I dunno if that's some sort of Google penalty or something's been messed up in the on-page optimization? Google console is still showing all greens and we don't know what to think? What steps should we take after we've disavowed the links? can the website ever rank again? is it really penalized, seeing as Google console isn't showing anything to suggest such?
