I want to get a little educated before we get started. I just scrapped up some start-up money and is planning to commit 12 hours of my day into this "project".

I am planning to start up a traveling site where it includes the benefits of traveling, success stories of people who traveled the world, and Ebooks (if there are good ones about traveling), and become an affiliate for TripAdvisor or Travelocity. I was thinking of adding a forum, but that maybe too much of a task for right now.

Also, I plan to use AdSense.

However, it looks as if the traveling niche may be dead just off the strength of its high competition. Me and my partner are sitting here brainstorming about this whole "traveling niche" thing. I don't want to approach the project with the intention of making $10,000 a week, because then everything would be sloppy because we would be moving in a desperate manner. Therefore, we want to build some reputation and unique visitors without thinking hard about the money we are going to make, although that is the motive. But I just want to make sure that we are entering a niche that is still pumping revenue.

A few IMs at our college are telling us that the traveling niche is difficult to monetize in these days. Just want to get an opinion from my BH's.

Dude, it sounds really silly when you say that travel niche is dead. It's one of the biggest and most profitable niches right now. Airline ticket sales are still increasing every single year. It is still growing, how it can be dead?

Talking about competition - of course it's competitive. A lot of people are traveling and talking about that, so it definitely won't be easy. But still, everything depends on the ability to create and interesting, reputable resource. I think that you can definitely make that. I like your approach of not thinking about money in the beginning. Only with this approach you will be able to build something serious, because chasing a quick buck won't make your website successful.
