There is a lot of good money to be made in list building. The better you are at it, the more money you can make over and over from your lists.

The money is not only in the list and if you can get a quick conversion you should. But list building provides you with your own private stream of targeted traffic that you can milk for as long as you can get in the inbox. It insulates you from worrying about the vagaries of search engine traffic.

Money is not just in the list... I find it works better in some niches better then others. I always like to include it in my sales funnel for the good old upsell after the fact. Find a niche were ppl are not used to being on a list and you will see a higher conversion rate. The "make money" subscribers are just bombarded daily with get rich get stuff like it's not even funny. On the other hand ppl interested in "horse back riding" are not...

thank you all, let me try to make it a more specific question, i have a new project, its in a niche that listbuilding isnt really something people do there, should my main goal be to get a huge list, or should i focus to make conversions on the site?

What bizzman said above is very true, and applies directly to your question.

Just because list building isn't really something people do in your niche, doesn't mean it isn't profitable, or even more profitable then just selling straight away.

Without knowing your niche, answering your question intelligently is nearly impossible.

Your best bet in this instance (and this applies to nearly everything else in life & internet marketing) is to forget entirely about what other people are doing and find out what works yourself.

List building is a huge money maker, when implemented properly, and will work with nearly any niche at all.

If you're not sure about whether to sell straight out of the gate or to build a list first and then try to sell, try it both ways.

Make sure you always collect contact information when a sale is made (therefore building a list of buyers...people you know will pull out a credit card to make a purchase) and make sure you have a way to collect contact information for those who visit your site but don't buy right away.

You should always give your prospects the option to join a list. It takes almost no time or money at all to setup your autoresponder.

The returns will be way worth it.

You can definitely make a lot of money without a list. But with a list, you can keep marketing to those customers for the long term. Use whatever techniques you want to get them there and buying, but be sure to grab an email so you can market to them for more money.

I thanked you btut it doesn't show... Anyway I completely agree. In fact I am implenting a list on a niche that doesn't seem to have many lists, or at least in the top 10 (none of em have it but in deeper pages they have a crappy opt in or two, by crappy i mean ugly graphics, not very engaging text, and no real offers like free ebooks). I spent this week making a product to give away and instead of giving it away complety free I plan to put a gateway on it and an opt-in form at the end. That way I'll still make money, even if I don't make money (err get opt-ins)! Now I just need to reach page 1...

Yes there is, I'm talking from a white hat everyday point of view.

I'm into watches and am on Orient USA's email list, a month ago they released their 60th anniversary watches and I bought 3 for a total of $900 (2 for me, 1 for a friend). I wouldn't have known about it if they hadn't sent me the email.
