    Hey guys,

I have been also hit by the update on 3 domains so far, 2 are EMD the 3rd is not. I have very little datas so i'm opening a thread in order to see if others fellows members has seen what i'm going to refer to.

This isn't a hate thread about G or Matty or your losses

Okay so for once this update doesn't hide any mystery, EMD doesn't carry as much as SEO juice than it used to be. Basically, they have either diluted the semantic weight of the domain or remove it completly.

So 2 EMD down, okay, we will see what we can do about them later.

What i'm more worried about is the 3rd website which is an ecommerce website with a brandable domain name. Some keywords have dropped today and there were in first page for 8 months.

The keyword isn't in the URL at all and they are LSI of main keywords barely mentionned throughout the website.

However i built some web 2.0 properties as tiers 1 named like the following : keyword.wordpress.com for instance.

I believe those web 2.0 properties has lost a serious weight during the update or they have emphasized the conceptual map from the corpus of the website and consequently decreased the semantic weight carried through anchors.

I don't have much datas to either claim i'm telling BS or that i'm right, for now it just sounds logical but nothing more.

If you have some datas to share please go ahead

Question: did your site lose search engine traffic from related keywords that you did not specifically targeted with link building?

All my EMDs or not that have used SB (or other means) to backlink tier 3 are now in the deep darkness of Google...
My only sites that remain on top have never had any tier 2 or 3 and even less backlinking...

Nope, the traffic are fine on those. However, the biggest keywords of the website where i pushed hard on them didn't fall and even benefit from the update as it took out some EMD. All my others websites are doing fine so far. The one i quoted is peculiar as it is the only one which is ranking artificially through Web 2.0 without the keywords beeing mentionned explicitely in the website.

However, Codythebest's experience in spite of beeing dramatic is interesting, anchors carried through tiers is an issue ? or irrelevant backlinking campaign is ?

One weird thing I just noticed is the EMD sites I paid people to develop for me are gone, but the ones I created myself are all fine.

Then that is what I've found. It is interesting; websites that got caught in this algo clearly were not careful enough (including my own) were clearly not careful enough when pushing after certain keywords. However; while my rankings tanked for those keywords (still in page 1, yuss) the website is doing great from related searches that I did not push.

Basically, I thought my website as a whole would get penalised; turns out, thats not true at all. Just those specific keywords. It shows to me the following is a safe investment:

    Safe (but long-term) Investment

    - Pick a niche that receives lots and lots of interest. While it may have some $$$ keywords, it also must be searched for a lot generally with lots and lots of small, but related searches.
    - Add plenty of well-targeted, compelling content, and add new content frequently
    - Use an aged domain if at all possible over EMD
    - Feel free to target some $$$ keywords for each site, but mostly focus on building up your trust and authority within the general niche.

If you get caught going after the $$$ keywords, then you get slapped, sure. But the algorithm is evolving, and if you are an authority site it can slap you for certain keywords while still letting you rake in traffic from related keywords.

The safest strategy is to try and bring in lots of long-tail searches, rather than rely on traffic from one specific keyword. Moving forward, for long-term websites, this should be the main priority. Not ranking for the $$$ keywords.

Most of my websites came out unscathed and actually increased in rankings. The thing is that there's not much similarity between them, some are crap and others are dominating sites in the niche.

Looking at the website s that have been hit hard I notice that many of them are newer, extremely optimized, and have little diversification to backlinks. Overall they look like your typical EMD MNS which Google was clearly targeting with this update.

For those of you hit, how new were your websites? How many pages were they? Did you do ANY linkbuilding diversification?

Here's what happened in the past few days:

    1) My EMD is ranking number 1 for it's amin keyword (it's only a few months old).

    while

    2) My site that is 10+ years old and as AUTHORITY of a site as you can get in it's niche has vanished.

    Google = retarded

I'm wondering if after a while people (the general public) with start getting pissed of at google's results and start using yahoo or bing, once the majority of people move from one main web site to another (myspace to facebook), the original sh*tty web site (in this case google) shrivels up and dies.

This sort of happened to me on my major (non EMD) site - most of my crucial longer-tail keywords that were naturally used on the site dropped from #1 (to #2, #4 or #6) --- but top ten keywords that were hardly used in the site's text at all dropped out of the top 100s, and naturally occurring big-money keywords dropped from around #20 to nowheresville. It's definitely very selective, when it comes to the effect it had on authority sites at least in my experience. As for my EMDs........yuck.
