Is the domain age retained only if such domain is redeemed?

I know with a person that owned a really old domain (pre 2k); this domain has now "expired", so it is available to be registered. This person has the option to redeem it, however I can also register it.

Question:Will the domain retain the age if I register it or will it only retain the age if it gets to be redeemed? I am pretty sure it must be redeemed, however want to double check.

    Thanks in advance

(Please do not reply anything in regards of links, pa, da, pr, tf or other shit; my question only refers to its age; thanks)

If the domain drops and is then purchased, then the search engines will consider it as a new domain and the value due to age may not carry over.

I know you don't want to know about other parameters (links etc), but age is just one small parameter in over 200 parameters used by search engines to value websites.
