I have a website that has recently hit top 5 in google on a rather competitive keyword.

Yesterday I'm looking at analytics and see a small spike in visitors 5 days ago, I take a closer look, and I see that 580 visitors came to my site that day from voyeurcloud[dot]com

I have a look at that site and I cant see any link to my site there. Maybe the link got removed, because the visits had stopped.
I dont see any logical reason for them to link to me except doing neg seo.

How can I protect myself from that?

You need to remember that there are tools out there that people use that make it look like they are sending visitors to your site. The reason for this is because they know webmasters will visit the site to see why they are getting all the traffic. It could just be one of those tricks, especially if they have not sent any traffic since that one day.

That would be some really ineffective Negative SEO if it was bringing in tons of visitors from a single URL.

It is simply referrer spam. Guys do it all the time to get backlinks from unprotected stats-sites that show the referrer and to gain the traffic of webmaster to search where the link is.

It's just referrer spam, I get that on my legit sites all the time.
