Never, social networking is where its at... Why do you think everyone uses it to advertise, most businesses now have a myspace, twitter, or facebook...

Social networking is surely NOT a waste of time.
If you use it properly you will get sales for SURE.

But do not apply your techniques as spamming.

Social Networking can do nothing but good for your site, especially if you created a like page on facebook, becuase eventually that would bring you more traffic and become high in ranking as facebook is PR9. Your guaranteed better results.

I know several people who have driven large growth in their small businesses using social networking, especially Facebook fan pages.

It a great way to connect with customers in your local market and to build trust / a relationship with them. You can also drive direct short term sales by getting the word out to your target market about specials, sales or limited offers - Facebook and Twitter are both great for this.

Social buzz also has a large positive effect on your search engine placements.

    Do it!

Social networking is really a good effort. Try to do it in an effective manner so that it can give actually something in return to your business.

If you are a small business owner and you are thinking about social networking you are thinking correctly! You really have no idea how helpful it can be to a small business! Facebook is the best place for local business, you can find people in your area rather easily and quickly and target them as well!

There is so much to be done with it. I got my first big break by organizing a local business social network for a lawyer in my area. The lawyer pays me to this day a nice monthly fee to continue to target all kinds of people for him and I know he makes a killing off of the "party animals" that drink and do stupid things! (lots of them on facebook lol)

It's that outside of the box thinking needed to excel in any business!

I know I'm newly registered but I'm a vet and a good source of SEO info, so if you want guidance just hit me up here. :)

Why don't you ask Charlie Sheen, Barack Obama or any other celebrity or politician who is earning a zillion bucks or got elected through social networking? Jesus, man! You also might take notce that virtually every site on the net has links to sical networks. They don't do it just for the Hell of it.

it's not just there are a lot of opportunities in social networking itself, but a few months ago google/bing admitted that the content you post on your social network profiles effects your site ranking (heck, even individual tweets can rank on google)

please also note: it helps your site rank better if you have an authority account with quality content, however spam accounts don't help much

if you're a small business owner and dunno much about social networking (for business purposes) and if you have the funds, you can still outsource this job to somebody who knows what the fuck he's doing

social marketing will help your sales, period

not trying to degrade the power of social networking, but do you seriously believe Obama got elected through social networking? :D

    lol

he got elected because of all the corporate funding for him. Without those huge money, he wouldn't even be able to show up on TV.

    great topic here..

I've been researching about how to sell social network services to small business, together with SEO..

but I need myself to understand a little better how this can help my clients to get customers..

in BHW people talk a lot about monetizing twitter and facebook as aff marketers, but not from this point of view..

Social networking is still popular and can earn you good amount with proper approach and plan. First survey the target market, know their taste and decide a basic objective of creating social website either it is dating, matrimonial or some other. Create USPS which will sell your website and just enter into the competiton.

If you're talking about it for the SEO side effects...I think you have a point.

I think your time and energy might be better invested in more traditional link-building.

Despite all the hype, I haven't seen too many examples of having a big fan/follower base will help you with your Google rankings.

What is always helpful, is if you're able to create some kind of content that will go viral, getting you tons and tons of links on these social sites - but that's not easy to do, and luck is involved.

START with normal SEO and linkbuilding.

Social media is the icing on the cake, so to speak...you can add it later.

Social networking is good. I wouldn't rely on sites that give you exposure or followers or friends, etc though. That will only help with ranking. I used twiends, but I find that 90% of your followers on twiends are just spam or users who don't even look at your tweets. Then there is twitface which reduced the followers I get by 80% cause its a verified service. nice to have.

Social networking not gives you the customers because people give time to social sites for entertainment, not for purchasing so best way to get money from social networking sites is creating a entertainment sites, put adsense on it and have huge traffic from these social networking sites. This will give you $$$s in adsense.

perhaps you could share more about your business? if youre selling something like escalators, i think the benefits of being on social networking sites would be rather limited. nevertheless, it will still help to spread the company name.
