So what? Things change. Ecommerce stores were already easy to build with WordPress plugins, Shopify makes it even simpler and more secure. No longer does mom and pops need to deal with credit card transactions, sites like Shopify deal with it and it makes the industry of online shopping safer.

If you're a web developer capable of building online stores: you're also capable of other potentially larger and greater things as well.

Thanks! People love to complain because their brain is to drained to see money making opportunities everywhere like they are stupid or something?

Wow, it was just a question lol

Shopify and others have mostly fees, they also own your website and you can't take it with you. It also takes time to build the website and a lot of people don't have that.

Based on this, what is a competitive price one would charge to build a store?

    No.

It's just making it easier to access for those who would not have the £3,000 sat around for a web designer in the first place.

A real business would not use a DIY platform for ecommerce, they would hire a web designer to work in house or go and find an agency or freelancer.

But shopify and others are great for start ups or people looking to do start small from their home... good luck to them but these are not the people you want to waste your time with as a web dev, they do not know what they want and they do not have money. These are the worst two combinations you can find in a client.

Shopify is just such a better solution out of the box that 5000$ dollars to spend on a developer is a complete waste of time because of problems you will encouter. Plus the extentions you can just attach with ease without having to integrate with APIs yourself.

You have to target businesses when it comes to development or you'll be stuck making $50 WP sites.

No. As a developer myself, the amount of work thrown my way only increases, but the type of work is different, more challenging and more complex.

To those who put up a Wordpress site with a payment gateway that call themselves developers, yeah, your job is in jeopardy because you have to adapt and up your game, or go out of business.

it's crazy that people are frowned upon for not using their real names on the internet anymore. i'm a dinosaur (29, been at it since i was a kid) and it's bittersweet to see where we've come

There is a big difference between being able to do something and doing something well.

Everyone owns a camera, but not everyone is a photographer.

Everyone owns clothes, but not everyone knows how to dress.

Everyone can operate a pair of scissors, but who will you let cut your hair?
