If you type in condos, co-ops, homes, houses, any key word you can think of paired with a local area, the first page is mostly dominated by my those national real estate websites like Trulia, Realtor, etc.

My brother works in a firm that just opened up and his boss is hinting at me doing some online services for them. I could try to get them in the local 3 pack that shows up, but organic results seem off the table. What other online services could I offer for them? So far I got reputation management (getting them reviews)

What do you understand by SEO? Black hat? White hat? Backlinks? On page optimization? Fixing HTML architecture?

If you are hinting to black hat and backlinks, then my advice is to analyze the competition and see if they are ranking through black hat. Usually, real estate ranks through paid links (high PR and relevant), not obscure black hat methods, so you will have to allocate a good amount of money to buying links and cross your fingers Google doesn't catch you.

My point is the competition in this case is virtually unbeatable. The 1st page is dominated with national real estate search websites with very high PR like Trulia.com

Why not you try social media and play with PPC. Also, you can rank in google local places with the help of good citations and the like as well.

Yes it is still worth it for local city keywords like dallas real estate, dallas homes for sale etc. Because when you look at the commissions from the industry it certainly justifies.

I agree with you, real estate is one of those niche that is difficult to knock out even if you have all it takes.

It took me 7months to rank 8 keywords on the top 5 of Google for (attorney laws niche) and still going
despite all the links we used are the very finest in the market, strictly home page backlinks.

If you have a goal and you are determine to make a success, it can be done with time and resources.

Definitely research PPC. I rent my house in Virginia and advertise through Adwords, focusing on the area and using localized search results. Cracking the top three will be tough, but you might be able to help them out with PPC campaign for some of their important sales.

PPC is the best bet here because you get the targetted content that all those realtors are getting, without having to worry about failing (not ranking). PPC is guaranteed results -- it's just whether the ROI is positive or not.

Social media comes to mind, but also building a good SEO foundation - most of those national real estate companies don't go after each and every city. It is possible to get him on page one.
