I'm doing some keyword research and I found that Google greatly expanded their synonym database.

    (Random example)

Like if you type in the following query - "vehicle in new york", 9/10 SERP results will be "New York Cars" or "NY Car Service" or whatever, making it really though to actually target the "vehicle" keyword.

What do you folks think how this change is going to affect and maybe even obliterate keyword research as it seems nearly impossible to target a specific keyword?

So you are saying that I can still rank for the "vehicle" keyword? ;)

Yep, you can rank if you know the "rules". This is no longer a SEO (put the accent on "Search"EO) is a war that google fight with internet marketers to keep the money for themselves and not share any potential income that traffic can generate. But they still need to pretend that they provide legit search results so basic rules will stay the same.

Google moves the goals posts all the time, the only thing that's gotten harder is predicting what they will do next & when! Harder to rank though? I don't think so.

When the keyword has commercial value to it, as in the case of vehicle if you rank it via SEO, you're basically not paying google their toll fee. They want you to buy the vehicle keyword via adwords, which is VERY expensive, so if you manage to rank for vehicle, google will say you have broken the rules. The "rules" being that they feel you have to pay google for WWW traffic.....

(Yes, google monitors valuable keywords such as vehicle like it's their golden crown, they have a bazillion systems in place to detect fast rankings for valuable keywords....example payday loans has an army of google watchers monitoring for any quick rises....)

Well I'm not exactly targeting the "vehicle" keyword, my keyword is something like "kids furniture room" ;) but it still I feel like the results are skewed in a way 9/10 results are like "child bedroom decor" or whatever.. you get the point anyway.. so i hope i can make this work going to try it out ;)

Yes even i am seeing the same results as you are. I don't see any site that is optimized for a particular kw in the top 10 results, Mostly all the big players like amazon wikipedia webmd yahoo answers are ranking. Where as in bing its totally opposite.

Its not more difficult, weve just got to change our game. External backlinking has become only valuable if its partial match anchors and social signals are now more important than ever. Ranking for 5 long tails as opposed to betting all your linkjuice om one stupidly hard keyword like weight loss has become crucial

but no matter what anyone says, whether theyre a billionaire seo guru, or your mum, dont take their word for it. Seo has and always will be about trial and error. Sometimes blog comments work for a guy for a hard kw even though theyre spammy as fuck, why? Because perhaps google has overlooked it but similarly ive seen sites with quality backlinks and perfect onpage seo yet not ranking at all. Most seo gurus that give their view, isusually based on experience as opposed to hard core algo knowledge, just go build a trial website and see what you can make of it. Split test it with others and see what works best for your keywords.

So a million others are doing the same keyword research as you, using googles KWT so your going to get the same results as everyone else.

You should be doing something other than what everyone else is doing otherwise your going to get the same exact results and thats NULL>

At the end of the day, there is always a website which ranks at number 1, all seo is is finding out how to get that number one spot. There are certain things which give it the number one. So no SEO, is not dead and never will be, because there will always be something which make the number one website number 1.

SEO is not hard but it takes time organization - planning and executing...

The same applies for both WH and BH SEO...

If you don't get set up right - it is not going to happen...

Guys no rules on the SEO | Still Google is examining their algorithms and changing very often their algorithms. So you can't stick to the what you expecting to do "Writing a unique article' lol it's pointless seriously? So What we are going to do?

SEO becomes harder yet manageable. You need to be flexible and adapt with the change.

    Not harder - different

The last sentence you make is bang on though "specific keyword" - we are nearing the end of that, have been approaching the day ever since Google targeted "sniper" style sites 3 years ago.

It's not gpoing to be hard to work out the phrases nbd words that support the keyword you want to rank for, have content that reflects that, answers questions and gives information while having links from other authorities in the field. Not going to be hard at all.

In fact someone will have an app out for it by the end of October, I'd put money on it - and then it's "same old same old"

What you are seeing is - the most suited results for that keyword. No, going after the vehicle keyword is not as easy as it used to be, but now if you do things the right way, you get a lot more traffic because of this hummingbird change. If your website is the most suited for anyone looking for a car service in NY, you'll come up for all of them instead of just "car service NY".

Now in your particular example, every car is a vehicle, but not every vehicle is a car, so i'd assume that van/limo/bus rentals would come up higher up (or at least they should).
