If you want to advertise your graphic design service, would it be a waste of time to use SEO and PPC, since anything to do with the subject of graphic design will already be dominated by others?

Can you imagine how many people are targeting graphic design keywords? You might as well be targeting "make money online". Am I wrong to think this?

IMHO for graphic design, IF you are charging enough for a conversion to be fairly worth-while then geo-targeted PPC makes sense to me. Say you're a graphic designer in St. Louis, you could easily get some good exposure and target it just to that area and surrounding cities. You could always use one of those free $100 Bing vouchers to test the idea.

It's not. You still need to be found in search engines just like what other profession does. Creating an online portfolio for your services, advertising yourself will still give you possible traffic that may lead to conversions. No effort is useless if you are doing it right.

I've never found anything but trash searching for graphic designers and illustrators. I, as well as most people I know, go directly to where artists like to hang out and their portfolio is easily displayed. My preference is dribbble which makes it easy to contact artists and discuss commission as well as DeviantArt to some limited extent (rare illustration work). If you want face-to-face handshake clients, do a local PPC campaign

For low end graphic design, I think reviews sell the service. So if I need some design work done that I don't want to pay a lot for, I look to Freelancer for Fiverr and look at reviews. I've tried searching for a graphic designer before without success. Moreover, who cares where the the graphic designer is located today? So long as the work is good, the designer could be anywhere. So in my opinion, unless you are selling a high end or specific design service, I am not sure you will get customers out of either SEO or PPC.
