I have a seller offering 3 PR3 domains for cheap. However, they don't have any backlinks. The sellers said the reason the domains have PR3 is because he bought them expired. Is PR a guarantee of rankability and quality or are there ways to BS the PR?

There are ways to fake the pr. If there are no links to the domain it has no PR, unless another domain is being redirected to it.

The only guarantee in SEO is that there's no guarantees.

So using PR checkers to verify would not help to verify?

There are many ways to BS PR, if a site has no backlinks, most likely it can't have any PR.

A PR 3 does not mean anything on its own. First of all, all Google PR is contextual since many years ago. It may be PR 3 for "butter cookies" but be PR 0 for "insurance quotes". Secondly, PR is a questionable metric in itself: Google puts out an outdated PR value and no PR checker is 100% accurate. Thirdly, PR 3 is not difficult to achieve, it's a grade 3 on a scale of 0 to 10, and that scale is exponential so PR 3 is really the low end.

If you don`t know how to check a domain, there`s a high chance you are going to waste your money and time. Happened to me before

Potential to rank, sure. But any domain, from 2 minutes old to 2 years old, has the potential to rank. Rather, it heavily depends on your skill level and knowledge, know quantitative factors like PR.

    I don't think you're right there.
Contextual may be better, but saying google doesn't value high PR links that aren't is wrong.

No it's not IMO. I had a PR4 website which never came to first position. I made cash with it though. PR doesn't guarantee ranking.

What the seller is saying is a load of bullshit - if there are no backlinks then there is no PR3 regardless of whether they are expired or not. All of the major backlink checkers such as Moz, Majestic and Ahrefs will show backlinks to an expired domain so if these do not show anything then chances are you are being scammed.

As with all things, if it sounds too good to be true then it most probably is.

How do you know it's PR3? The last time Google released a public update was in December 2013. It might actually be PR0 right now and you don't know it yet because there hasn't been another public update...

You can find lots of high PR domains with no backlinks on expireddomains.net For some reason nobody buys them. Ask yourself why?

Of course, if the domain has real pr it should have links from authority sites, try to see what links it had in majesticseo, for example, if it even hadn't any links then its a scam.

Exactly - just because the PR is high doesn't necessarily mean it will rank on the first page - what if all the competitors have an even higher PR? :)

A domain is only as powerful as the links pointing to it. The one you are being shown may be faked so be careful! Don't trust pr, leave that till the end, there are a load of other checks you need to do first to make sure it is safe and ok to use. Do some diggiong on this forum, there are quite a few domain buying guides.

We have a PR3 domain that sometimes gets outranked by other domains with lower PR. It's just one of many factors that will influence the rankings. For example, if a product has a good quality description with a video and several images for each variation, it will often outrank a product on a different site that has more PR but less content on the page.
