There are many keywords related to payday loans that are easy to rank, you just have to look hard enough and spend enough time. PayDay loans itself as a keyword is way way to hard. I have a collection totalling 170k searches and a max competition of 25 meaning it's fairly easy.

You won't discover most of the links because they are blocked by crawlers. You will only know how hard it is when you try to outrank them

I hope you're better than this. Any long tail related to payday loans is nailed to death with PBN links and thus won't show on a comp score.

Might be? If you're selling people payday loans keywords based on what a keyword competition score says, you shouldn't be selling keywords at all. "payday loans direct lenders" has a competition score 14/100.
