they make little to no difference,
for crawlers, it's just a few added up content to the page,
spammy comments comes with spammy content & links tho and even makes a worst UX, you should delete/prevent them

Just delete spam and you should be good to go.

I wouldn't allow links to be honest.

is good for seo
There is a debate going wheter or not comment count as updated content.

Considering how good some Q&A sites are doing, with large threads (like BHW in fact) I'd say they can contribute.

Currently I have always deactivated them, at the level of seo I think that nothing changes.

coments improve seo?
Yes, more words is better for SEO. Quality comments help. Nofollow the links.

Additionally, comments show engagement. Do you think Google just ignores that? I promote commenting and engagement with all of my clients' blogs.

That's why I don't like leaving the comments on because of the spams. You can try a disqus or facebook comment SDK/plug-in. At least you can report those guys and they can be filtered but they still proliferate like maggots.

Real comments or fake spam comments?

If it's just fake and spam, delete it.

A keyword left on your comment section can attract traffic to your site. If you want to leave comments on your blog make sure that the comment relates to the post.

Nothing wrong with having plenty of comments, delete the spam ones.

It's a bad idea to leave spam comments on your blog.

Spam comments are easy to figure because you can just enter them into Copyscape, and you would see that they've been published in many different places.

Those kinds of comments are not really going to help you.

You know what will?

Comments that are specific to your posts.

These are comments that actually ask important questions regarding your content.

These can be opportunities for a Q and A or some sort of exchange between you and a member of your community.

Don't underestimate the power of comments because when visitors see that you are taking the time to actually engage with the content's community, their trust in your brand increases.

Now, of course, this depends on your niche.

If you're in a niche where people just come in, get what they want, and leave never to return again, comments can still help you by adding an extra layer of information you may not have covered on your post.

But generally speaking, blog comments help you the most when you are in a niche that tends to attract communities.

I suggest that you leave comments as long as they are not duplicate comments or spam and actually add something of value to your content.

Otherwise, delete them.
