Yes. I've gone through hundreds of case studies on this. Go look at any website that has x amount of backlinks.. then all of the sudden spikes a 3,000 backlink growth and then nothing, over a course of time. It's a huge red flag.. Countless number of sites have been penalized for this. Ever hear about business owners buying backlinks with no idea how they work so they build a ton then stop and the next month they loose all their rankings and go out of business.. Can websites go social or viral, yes but the problem is you need all of the social indications going along with that to hopefully squeak by under the radar. Regardless it's very important from what I see, I always try to keep it steady and never exceed a 50% growth from the previous month, gradually increasing and increasing the # but keeping the % varied but similar.
In some cases yes but what i have seen that people indexed around 300 links a day for fresh website and beating like a BOSS!
