I'm new to the forum and I have not read all of the threads  (The eye roll is that there are so many = a good thing) but my question is - Do you guys/gals feel that link building is still as important as it was a year or two ago? Judging by my personal sites and the research I've done I'd say it isn't. I think it's still important and gives you an edge, but there's a lot of other things Google is now valuing more. Whereas before link building imo was the most important.

I'm no SEO expert and if anyone could tell me, I'm confident you guys will :)

I know a couple guys that are really good at SEO and over the last year have taken their sites to #1 for several main keywords with very little link building. Passing up other sites that focused mostly on link building.

Maybe ask them how they did it with very little link building and post that... I would be interested in exactly how that worked?

I've recently seen results in my niche do a back-flip where before, highly linked sites were ranking well, and now, minimally linked sites are outperforming.

I'm not sure if you could generalise this to all searches or if it only applies to certain niches or under some certain context.

It's just not easy to tell these days...

Yes, link building it is a big part of SEO. There may be particular cases but things like links will still be seen as votes from others.

Links will always be around, and will always be at least a part-determining factor of a sites popularity. If you actually go on a forum about a certain topic, you'll see users constantly linking out to websites that fit a particular thread, or discussion. This is what real people are doing. Having said that, I am sure Google is aware of this and won't be discounting links any time soon.

More than likely you'll see sites with less and less links outperforming sites with more links. Without taking a look, I'll simply put this down to the site with less links having very targeted incoming links that are from a domain, article or discussion that directly relates to it.

I'm sorry didn't make myself very clear. It was early this morning and I was probably still half asleep.

What I meant to say was - The one way links and monthly link building packages you can purchase - Do they work as well as they used to? I don't understand link building that well so please excuse my ignorance. I just know some of the sites I used to watch thru (alexa and another site strength indicator tool)had thousands of links and now the majority of them are no longer on top.

I understand there is a lot of other link building going on. I heard google isn't liking the weak links much anymore - are the weak links the packages I mentioned above?

Again, sorry for the dumb questions. I obviously don't understand it very well.

Thanks in advance for any clarity...

I would absolutely never purchase a link building package now adays its actually the exact reason the sites that you saw with a few thousand links are no longer on top. Google is super senseative when it comes to you linkbuilding, Most of the people offering monthly link building packages are going to suck. You need to make sure that your links are comming form relatable sites in and closely around your niche. I'm no expert but I'll let you know whats been working for me. I created an electronic music blog in January. EDM has gotten extremely popular over the past few and now there is alot of controversy over "mainstream edm" which I rank #1 for.
Step one Content is key, if you take the time to write some good quality content it will help you tremdendously
get your on page seo down.
Focus on a few longtail keywords
Build your digital brand, Social media is a huge huge factor in SEO nowadays, For me I've built a FB page, Twitter, Soundcloud, Google + and a few others,
When sharing things and posts on social media accounts take those links and pimp them on sites like reddit
The last thing Ive done is found some high pr do follow blogs to comment and link but make sure your comments have real substance.

Like I said I'm no pro but what I've worked out has been working for me good luck.

Yes, link building is still a huge part of off-site SEO. However you should be doing creative and advanced link building to get the best link equity. 1 high quality link is better than e.g. a thousand weak quality links for sure.

Like Bgibson said, think of your business as a brand. Instead of just thinking tactically (i.e. lots of links woohoo!) you should think about it strategically. After all, it's about marketing. That's why SEO is one of the skill sets of Internet Marketing. ;)

you may be seeing the sites that have 10k comment links off spam sites being hit, while sites with 10 links from high PR non spam sites get bonuses...

That's strange and funny at the same time. I just finished my post on a very similar thread and I run into this one not one minute after.

I believe my answer in that thread is relevant to your interests. I hope you feel the same:
