After the latest Google update, where they've said they'd be actively "devaluing" links rather than "penalizing" links, I feel it might just be less risky and worth an attempt at building a few directory links from directories that still have decent DA. I think many people build PBNs but stop buildling links to their PBNs and do you think it would be harmful to even consider a reasonable number of directory links to point to the PBN sites?

If Google will index these directory links then it won't hurt at all. It will help your overall link diversity but don't expect much link juice to pass.

Yeah but perhaps it can help show a consistent growth in the link graph, as opposed to 0 growth which is what happens with most PBN sites

Not bad except that directory links look spammy usually, but if you could get decent ones then could be good.

I think a lot of people misundestood or didn't analyze what was said by Google Reps.

YES, Penguin Devaluate links instead of penalising the target site.

BUT and that is a big BUT (no pun intended): Penguin is one of the hundreds algorithm of googles. The one penalising your site for spammy link building are still running. Just because Penguin doesn't do it, doesnt mean that their other algorithms don't either.

Yeah but the thing is in my experiments with around 6 sites I own - they have around 40% of their links only from directories, they've not received any penalty warning even once and they've been around for between 2-3.5 years now. They're doing alright, ranking for some long tail terms and thus my assumption is that if anything, perhaps Google is not penalizing for directory links since they're easy to detect and can be easily devalued or given minimal value but they would rather penalise the more suspicious links which are more deceptive in nature. Anyway all this a matter of speculation, everything is with Google. However, from my sites and its' link profile, that is a conclusion I've drawn that directory links (for whatever reason) are not leading to a penalty BUT they may not be helping very much either.
