Is it worth it to target insanely low targeted keyword searches?

So basically I was talking SEO with a buddy of mine from work today and he was talking about some of his micro niche sites. He said he has a few of them that are pretty good, but one thing he thought was weird is that he actually got more converts from a keyword he was never initially targeting that had like 150 something local searches per month.

He told me about how he can always rely on at least 1-2 converts per month for these small keywords. It made me want to build an authority site in some niche just targeting small 100-200 search keywords until I was seen as an authority by google in my niche and from there go for higher search terms.

I imagine it would be really easy to rank for these small terms especially since no one will try to rank for such a small amount of traffic.

    What's your thoughts?

That is just good keyword research.

Most people refer to it as targeting the long tails, surely you have heard of it.

I hear about this all of the time. Those two converts have to be pretty valuable from your friends perspective to be worth it IMO

Something that has 1 million searches a month but no converts is worth less than a 1 search that converts 100%. I\

Yes, Target long tail keywords with less competition.. once you rank it, You will also rank for high Searched Volume over time once you gain authority...

I think the intent of the searcher is more important. It all depends on whether the search term would lead to a sale. A high converting low traffic keyword would be more valuable than a low converting keyword with high traffic IMO.
