Is it worth it, or waste of time and money searching for alien life?

It 's not a waste of my money if you 're paying for it - it is a waste of my money if I 'm paying for it :)

The US government just wasted $600,000 on Facebook likes. I'd say this was a far more worthy and just cause.

And yeah with 60,000,000,000 potentially habitable planets just in our galaxy, there is a very good chance for intelligent life

It's a total waste for sure. It would be very surprising if there is no life elsewhere. There are a lot of people who die from hunger. Feed them first rather than feeding the probable aliens..

Aliens - Bah...we just let them mind their own business so they don't invade us.
Besides, I wonder if an alien made the same thread about us in an alien BHW many planets away.

Money doesn't solve poverty. That has been proven time and time again

The only problem is that wealth is not super abundant. How a poor person gets rich matters, not for any ethical reasons, but for pragmatic ones. For example, suppose one goes and robs his neighbour while another one produces things others want to buy. The visible result is that both get out of poverty - the invisible result though, is it the same effect for the economy?

I was talking on a national scale rather than an individual one.

Hundreds and hundreds of billions in aid have been given to poor countries over the decades and most of them are still in the same, or worse, state than before. Even rich countries like India have insane poverty issues. It's very complex with many factors involved, however just throwing money at it or thinking money solves the problem is wrong in my opinion

It's really sad that we live in a World where a country can spend over one trillion ($1,000,000,000,000) blowing people up and causing the deaths of a million innocent people without any sort of justification or responsibility, but then it's questioned and scrutinized to the nth degree when a tiny fraction of that is asked for scientific research

Science doesn't need government supplied funds to be productive. Most of that funding is wasted to unproductive things :)

Science does (mostly) improve our lives and there is a deep human need for such philosophical questions as; "are we alone in the universe", so I don't think it is a waste of money myself. If it wasn't for individuals that want to ask questions, we would still be living in caves and dying at 25 years old.

Humans already dominate earth, is that not enough??..

The only reason there's an interest in life on other planets is to see if we can learn anything from them and then dominate them as well.

Think about it, do you think the governments that rule earth will accept the possibly of other life forms being superior to them?

It's disgusting how greedy human nature is..
