Hey guys. I might be able to get my hands on some cash to buy an iMac for my video editing needs. I have a souped up PC running AE and Vegas, but rendering times on AE are horrible of course. Is it worth the $2k to get a 27-inch iMac with 8GB RAM and the 1GB video card? or go with a bigger PC box?

Apple hardware is good if you want something decent OOTB. Otherwise, head over to newegg and create your own beast piece by piece. Having been a unix guy for many years and while I tend to like the BSD core, I'm NOT a fan of the apple interface "for dummies" at all if that matters to you: I'd have so many bad things to say about the dock from a usability standpoint that would probably take me 2 days, but that's beyond the scope of the question I guess. :D

I don't know if Apple is better for video editing stuff or not, but please, please don't take advice from an apple fanboy or get it for the looks.
    Checkout these forums:

    Specifically, these two sections:
    http://www.thinkdigit.com/forum/pc-components-configurations/
    http://www.thinkdigit.com/forum/laptops-netbooks/
The prices etc. are in indian rupees, but that shouldn't be an issue and they'll be able to help you with the configuration. Search around a bit and you might find someone with the same needs as you with a badass rig

You can get like 3 great laptops for $2000.

How many people with a Mac know how to use it to its potential or have the intention to do so?

That being said...My friend has a mac desktop...That thing has so many processor cores it's disgusting...and they all thread together perfectly. The set up was considerably more than $2000

I love mine and honestly I could probably build a better system for a lot less but I'm not a "computer guy" nor do I wish to learn anything about it. Plus I like OSX more than Windows so it makes sense for me.

End of the day, it's what makes the most sense for you personally.

I have a Macbook Air and like mrsix said, it all depends on the person. I love mine, but I only use this for browsing the web and handling that kind of business. With software, I stick to PCs.

Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5

Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB
    Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)

    Display 27-inch (2560 x 1440) AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB graphics

I don't do video editing on it but I sure do make it work. I often have Photoshop, Coda, Transmit, Chrome, Firefox and Safari open while I take a break to play Guild Wars 2 on medium video settings without any problems :D

You could buy a top of the line cpu, gfx card, and fill your entire mobo with fast ram for that price. Macs are never worth it.

It depends on what you want to do with your pc. For Audio and Video editing i would say yes. otherwise no.

Build your own PC. Hands down the best solution. The PC I built is infinitely better than what I could have got from a stock Apple build at the same price.

Just to give you an idea for ~$2k (parts are much cheaper now) I got:
    8 core 3.9ghz overclocked
    16Gb RAM
    3Gb Video Card
    4TB HDD
    256GB Solid State Drive
    etc..

I think that if you build your own PC with that money you will be much better.

Some people say that the PC is better, some say that the MAC is superior... But, in the end, it all comes to one thing; what do you need and for what do you use it. I have a PC and a MAC and I use them both. The Mac is a 24" iMac from 2009, the PC is a Core i7 Ivy Bridge PC.

But, when it comes to the new MAC line, I really don't see a bigger difference between a high end MAC and a high end PC nowadays. They are both fairly strong and once you start to calculate the price you get to a similar price range.

For an example, when you calculate all the things and compare a $1999 iMac with a PC, you have to have at least $1700 to build a PC which could be an equivalent to the iMac in terms of quality:

    27" IPS monitor - $800
    Graphics card - $300
    Core i5 - $250
    MBO - $100
    RAM- $100
    Case - $100
    PSU - $100

If you like the looks and the usability/portability, go with the iMac
If you want more freedom in terms of exchanging the hardware, go for the PC

The sooner you figure out which one to buy the sooner you will get back to work, who cares if it's an apple or an alien.

That is a really expensive monitor lol. You can get 3 24" monitors for that price. I've done the math and you will get an infinitely better PC vs. a Mac. If you build it yourself you will save a ton of money too and get many more options. Being able to upgrade is huge.

Build your own. If you like the Apple OS then you can emulate it. Make sure you have an Intel processor though
