Is it worth convincing people to buy shoutouts or should I wait?

Almost exactly a month ago I started my first Instagram account for the sole purpose of monetization after I started reading this forum. My plan was to start by selling shoutouts and to do this I had a goal of 20k followers. I chose 20k because based on anecdotes on this forum, it would give me at least 1000 likes of engagement per photo on average which would in turn allow me to sell shoutouts at a $10/1000 likes price tag.

I chose an evergreen, high opportunity niche I was somewhat familiar with and started posting and acquiring users manually (no bots, buying etc ). At the moment I have 3.8k followers but my engagement has been unexpectedly through the roof at about 875-925 likes per pic (approx 23%) with over 30 comments each. People seem to love my stuff.

Based on this growth, I'm anticipating reaching 1000 likes by about 4.5k which has always been my target.

My problem is, do people care about engagement or followers more? I see a lot of accounts with up to 35k with 1000 to 1.5k likes say they sell shoutouts relatively easily.
If I do contact brands and people in my niche would it be an uphill battle to convince them I'm just as valuable or is it a lost cause until I reach 10k plus in followers? If it's possible, what advice would you have in terms of convincing potential shoutout customers?

    Thaks a lot guys...

No one is gonna buy shout outs from you. 10-40k followers are just a cake. There's no point for people to buy shout ous from such small accounts. My advice for you is to rather focusing on getting your account to 100k. Then there'll be more chances for you to make money through selling shout outs

Apart from that, people care about both things. You should have matching engagement with the number of followers you have.2-3% engagement is considered good engagement..

Thanks for the advice Harvey. So I found my prediction was right. I'm up to 4.5k followers and getting between 1k and 1.2k likes per pic which means between 22 and 26% engagement. So is it worth just buying say 16000 followers diluting myself to about 6% engagement since this still appears to be quite good for the number or would you still advise the long term strategy and worry about monetization down the line?

keep doing what your doing. Dont dilute and dont polute. Sell them something in the niche you are promoting. Thats good engagement and enough to make some good coin.

That's very encouraging. Since shoutouts are definitely off the table, do you think t-shirts could work for me now? My long term plan after shoutouts, I was thinking a teespring campaign with quotes targeted to my niche? Have people with my range of likes succeeded in that?

Funny thing just happened. A company approached me and has offered me free products and the $20 for a shoutout I asked for which they accepted! :D and I'm only at 5500 followers and 1200-1400 likes per pic. I guess some do value engagement! Officially made my first income from instagram!

Hi, i'm in the same spot as you were a little while ago, just getting started and im growing two accounts organically through following and liking photos. Do you mind if i ask you what kind of theme your account has? I'm a bit lost as to how i should theme my accounts..

Small accounts with good engagement and authentic followers can still sell plenty of shoutouts! Give it a shot, contact some brands or join some shoutout networks, you would be surprised.

Generally speaking, you're not going to be able to prove your engagement is real with such a small amount of followers. Buyers are skeptical even with larger accounts. Just grow your followers and maintain your engagement to around 20-50k, then try and sell some shout outs.

I won't go into detail about my niche for obvious reasons but it's in the healthy living/lifestyle niche.

    Seems reasonable, I won't dilute.

Why don't you use your account and start promoting your own products? .. You can find a method here where someone is using instagram and dropshiping .

Just an update, if anyone was following this.. I'm up to about 7000 followers and engagements remaining pretty good. Getting between 1500-1700 likes per pic on average. I've decided not to dilute. Started a teespring campaign and sold a few shirts, nothing to brag about but it was a pretty shitty photoshopped post, I was surprised to get any response at all! Even lost about 8 followers because of it lol. I'll probably have to pay someone to make the post in the future but it was an eye opening test.

By the way, does anyone know how to become a suggested user? I assumed with my high engagement, I'd have been chosen by now but that doesn't seem to be the case. Still hoping for that coveted notification. Could make my job easier overnight.
