I have a site with a good keyword. It's ranking on page 2 of Bing at the moment and that's with very little SEO. So far It's not in the first 20 pages of Google.
Is it worth optimizing it for Bing instead? I plan on monetizing it with AdSense only at the moment.
Is there any way to estimate the difference in traffic?

You should aim for all traffic you can get: Bing, Yahoo, Google, Direct and referral traffic. I get traffic from Bing, and at first I thought 'Who the hell use Bing?' ... But people use it. I guess some people that area using Explorer will search from Bing when searching from the toolbar.

Good SEO is in general good SEO, no matter what search engine you are optimizing for. Yeah, the algo is different, but they all like strong inbound links, good onsite and relevant content.

I use a tool for position checking which checks also positions on bing and yahoo. I'm always smiling when I see my posts being on the first page of bing. And yes - they don't bring any traffic from it.
There is a reason it is easier to rank on bing. You simply get less in return.
So focus on ranking google and think about bing more as a bonus.

Aim for all and any traffic, but I wouldn't deliberately neglect google. It is the biggest form of search engine traffic.

    No.

    The algorithm is different.
You can rank the way you ranked in 2008 for Google, but you know what? Your sorry ass will be off the serps in Google.

If you rank for Google the "white" way, you will most likely take a century to rank in bing.

Anyways, unless your kw has a good number of searches on bing, I would just bother with Google, eventually you will also rank in Bing.

I generally don't tell clients to focus on one engine or the other. If you create high quality content you will naturally get links and then ranked. Like others however most of my traffic come from Google. I also track my ranking in Bing but one page on a site I operate for example has 146 search inbound visitors today 143 came from Google and the other 3 from DDG

I don't waste my time focusing on one engine or the other, I just make the site as good as possible and then hope for links

I've only just paid attention to bing, I get some search traffic from it and it's much easier to rank, exact match domains carry much more weight there.
Just go for higher search volume keywords if you want to attempt to rank on bing otherwise you won't get any traffic :)

it's strange as one of my adsense sites got hit by google (homepage penalty) and the inner pages are auto ranking top 50 over the last 6 weeks (i left the site alone as it had 20 articles and wanted to see what google planned to do with it) suddenly its earning good money because 2 of the 6k per month searches are page one in bing and yahoo.

My theory is the tactics used were a little old school but google has auto found the relevant articles i had built, the site is pa and da 50+ and so with a gently nudge the inner pages 'should' rank again in google but the tactics applied to the homepage initially have made it work nicely in bing and yahoo for the homepage.

I guess this actually looks like an all round solution if you have time to do it to get rankings across the board!lol

It would be a daft move to ignore 80% of your market.

I love traffic from bing... it converts better than any other search engine. The odds of a search impression being human is just very high... I even go as far as to buy every bing click I can get. The problem is that they just don't have enough volume. As great as their traffic is it rarely tops 5% of my search traffic by volume.

I want to focus on Bing, but I can't justify doing it until they start trending towards 50% of organic volume... Heck I'd hop over if they hit 30%... but at 5% they are neck in neck with yahoo and dangerously close to ask, aol, dogpile, etc.

Bing can not be a perfect alternative of Google

I tend to use Bing for B2B SEO, and Google for B2C.

Business' tend to lock their users into using IE, defaulting Bing as the search engine.

Don't take this tip lightly, I promise...!

They say something is better than nothing. so, you should also try for Bing. Google has become too unpredictable, so bing and yahoo can help you to get some traffic for the keywords.

So if we ignore that you get less traffic from bing, how should one "optimize" for bing?
I mean what's the difference seo strategy wise?

Usually if you optimize a site for Google it will also do well with Bing so why ignore such a large part of the market?

Don't just utilize Bing to gain traffic when there are many more search engines out there that can help you gain more traffic
which normally equals out to a higher payout from adsense.

Yes, why not, Bing is also a good alternative source for traffic. When you do adsense, you need as many organic visitors as possible and any search engine that could help you get visitors would be good so why restrcit yourself with Google alone?
