Is it that useful to gain a backlink from the front page of Digg (or Digg-like site)

As far as I know, Big G and other search engines see age of links a
positive factor for ranking a page. So let's assume you gain a backlink
from Digg's front page and G finds it and increase the ranking of your
    page.

But you can't remain at the front page for a long time, and later
big G revisit Digg and find your link disappears from the front page, and
I guess your ranking will be discounted..

What I believe is permanent backlinks from lower PR sites is
better than temporary links from high PR sites.

    Am I true????

The main objective of hitting page 1 of digg or any other social site networking site for that matter is for OTHER websites to notice and link to you (and those are permanent). Page 1 of digg or delicious should be worth a few good backlinks. Anyway, in the case of G you are correct the one link is temporary.

Digg has changed the way linking works and it now converts external links into its own domain.

If you get into page 1 of digg, you'll get a blast of traffic overnight. I've tried it with a viral video and my server crashed.

Digg also helps in SEO. One of my post got SERPed at #1 in Google for a minor news story, and just about every story I sent a Digg out on got in the top 5 in G. Your mileage may vary.
