If I am targeting "The best computers" as my keyword, and then use "The best laptop computers" does that count as a keyword that should be counted as part of my articles keyword density percentage?

Yes sure. It will take as a consider. The phrase match is also importance in keyword. We shouldn't exact keywords in all the places.

Yes it counts too.

Generally I do long articles and try to target my main keyword and sub keyword as a separated sub section... I feel long content is still a huge ranking factor.

You should include a summary about the difference also between desktop and laptop computers, and link to another couple of articles with more specific info there.
