Just registered a few .info domains several weeks ago, but I really seem to be struggling to rank for even low competition keywords. I've seen the threads where some say it is much harder to rank a .info for anything? Can I get some current opinions on this?

I think I've had a hard time getting .info to rank vs. .com .org and .net. maybe it's just my imagination. I just don't feel like buying both a .info and .com and doing a study.

I've ranked a .info before but I always wondered if it was effecting how long it took to get to the first page of google. From now on I get normal dot domains so I don't have to worry about that aspect...

I'm trying to rank fix4laptop(dot)info now: I'm using CL but the problem is only I have one account I need to get more verified by phone accounts, using BP and KIJIJI are more fine (for massive posting) but with less traffic, adding new content each day will help to improve the visit of the site, (another thing I'm using maxmind database for geo IP to try to match the location from the visitor with some content) I think there are not right way to make a domain(dot)info, just keep trying

I had an exact match .info that was ranking ok at the bottom of the first page but I was sure I could do better.

I got an exact match+S.com and it ranked #1 with less of the same quality of backlinks.

(all were article directory backlinks... the .com took less submissions to rank higher)

edit: There are many other factors to ranking. This doesn't prove anything. This is just my personal experience from my one low quality test.

It is possible to rank .info but with more efforts than .com and others. You might need to read http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/white-hat-seo/226933-info-can-rank-1-google-here-proof.html.

I have seen studies. It goes .com, .net, .org then the others. .com is like 7 times easier to rank then .org so .info is even tougher. It can be done but way more work.

Nah. Domain name extensions don't necessarily have an effect on a site's ability to rank for keywords --especially if the SEO done on the site is done correctly. I'm not sure about free domains though, like .co.cc, and any form of sub-domain extension; Those might not be able to rank well in Google.

Using TLDs (.com, .net, .org) doesnt make much of a difference. But using .info for the same KW is difficult to rank compared to TLDs mentioned above. Nevertheless I have seen .info ranking better that all other TLDs, but it had good backlinks to it. So its not impossible. :)

    All the best.

End of last year I registered .com .net .org .info .biz for a very low competition keyword. and did a test. I gave myself 3 days of seo and backlink building on each domain. Then left it. The order I did them in was .biz .info .org .net .com. So .com has been out there the shortest amount of time. The resultswere as follows. .com position 1. .org position 3 .net position 5 .info and .biz not on forst 3 pages.

This is not proof. because it was a bit of a flawed experiment. I tried to keep the backlinking similar across all domains, but for obvious reasons they werent exactly the same. On page SEO and the way each page looked had to be different.

I did this experiment to once and for all test for myself whether .coms .net's and .org's are better than the others. As far as I am concerned from now I will register keyword2k.com or keyword3k or something before I will bother with keyword.info. Shame because I have quite a few exact match .info's.

This is from my experiment, I did it because I need to conform it myself and because I always heard people talking about this topic.

I bought 2 exact domains, .info and .com

First, i put an 800 words seo'd content to the .info with all the aspects needed for other factor ie
    - link to another authority website (no follow)
    - link to inner page

Then I get a 100 bookmark service and 300 profile backlinks from here.

    Result
Took several days to index, since this a very easy niche to conquer..I couldn't understand why this site is so hard to rank..

After a week, it appears #8 on first page for two days, after that it drops..I don't check after that..

After that, I put another 800 seo'd content to .com exact domain site with of course another factor that needed for on page seo

I don't get backlinks for .com site, just bookmark it on digg..

    Result
Index in 24 hours only...without any promotions, it ranks on page 5 by itself..and stay there from that time..i know with a minimal backlink effort, this .com site will be sure on 1st page easily..

    Conclusion
I don't care what you guys will think, but from now on, i will only buy .com for my websites..there's an exception tho, we can still buy .info for the site that we dont plan to rank..example like dave guindon did, he use .info for his personal website daveguindon dot info

I'm not saying that you cannot rank with .info but it will take more effort than using .com

I hope this simple experiments can helps you guys make a decisions.. :)

I've got .info domains ranking on Page #1 Google. Use one of the free indexing tools plus pinglerdotcom to ping the site. I also run the site through onlywiredotcom for social bookmarking. Never really had a problem.
