I am curious to know if SEO techniques as far as search engine optimization can be used on sites that are not your own without the site owner noticing that the traffic is not legitimate?

It would show up in their analytics (if they are using it) and a change in visits/sales.

I've thought about this. Take random pages that rank like #1,000 and just test various link building methods on them. If the site owner obviously isn't making an income from these sites, or they're aged domains no one visits, yeah why not. If you risk hurting their income if they get slapped, it's wrong.

The reason I am doing it is that certain sites have written about my project in a positive light and I want them to be the first to show up when people search, opposed to others who have said negative things.

You would be ill advised to do this unless you contact the sites in question and ask permission. Expect not to get it, becuase site owners do not trust peop-le with doing seo on their money sites.

What you can do is look at up stream linkers, and seo that.

the right way to do this, is to build a few legitimate looking web2.0 links to the writeup, and a few (not a couple hundred, a FEW) social bookmarks, then link the hell out of the web2.0 blogposts you built that mention the article you want to rank, it looks natural that way and shouldn't piss the site owner off, i doubt someone would get mad about what looks like 20 people writing about something on the site that they appreciated, MAKE IT LOOK REAL

Can you confirm what you are talking about? Do you want to help the site owner without them knowing? Maybe like a present for them or a surprise?

Better and safer to build your own web 20
to rank rather then piss of the blog owners that said nice things

If you dont know what your doing, your likely to get them deindexed
