Alright, let's say hypothetically a new movie is going to be released. Is it possible to create a site and rank #1 with 100K competing sites in 24H and how do you reckon I could go about it? I've seen people easily take the top 3 ranks with sites that have less backlinks then mine in these situations and I really really ponder on how they do it. One thing I've noticed though is that they all use WP, whereas I use a plain CSS/HTML site, big difference?

If you've got any opinions/tips/shizzle you can share please do :).

I know there is a way you can get picked up by google news/yahoo news. They tend to pick up stories like this when popular news breaks. The downside is, it's hard to get accepted unless you're putting out around at least 10 articles per week. You can do this this by creating a google/yahoo news sitemap.

But honestly, I just set up my first wordpress blog about 3 weeks ago. The domain is a .org and the keyword has around 500k competing pages. I have about 5 articles on the website and 1 clickbank product on the main page. I checked it a week ago and realized i am number 5 for my keyword! I was completely shocked and the weird thing is I've only got around 5 inbound links. I'm getting beat by wonderhowto.com... All I did was use a few wordpress plug ins, like all in seo, sitemap, rss and bookmarked my site with my onlywire account.

I guess now i see why people love wordpress so much.. It's great

It is possible, but you would need enough backlinks to be found by the search engine to rank #1 in 24 hours

you can easily rank #1 for a mediocre keyword within 24 hours... however, staying there is the problem. :)

in other words, you could blast your domain with 2 million backlinks using xrumer or by purchasing an xrumer blast from someone and you'll rank quick... but google might not keep you there after a day or two.

my advice is to slowly build backlinks... do it the safe way, which is the correct way..

Are you sure they were not already on pages 2, 3 or 4 and you just didn't notice their gradual climb? I mean maybe its not an 'all of a sudden' thing and they were working on it for a little longer than you.

Well, baring in mind here this is event specific. It's meant to capture the spike in traffic which will come in a couple of days, and then completely die. In which case I think gradual link building is irrelevant because it's not something that is stable and will continue to bring in traffic. Also, next too the dudes website it says Dec 28 (is this a new google feature telling me when his WP blog was updated? or when it was indexed because I see it next to no other sites). We're talking 200K-250K comp keywords, non quoted, nothing big or special. I've got my positions all over the big G for various different keywords, however they're web 2.0's, articles and the such while he's got his main site ranking higher. That said, my sight is nowhere to be found until like the 6th page and from a BacklinkWatch on both sites, I seem to have far more backlinks :O. Does WP make that much difference? I'm using meta tags, h1's, img alts, all onpage SEO and offpage I can think off yet he's still crushing me. Or perhaps because it's a short lived event it's luck of the draw as I see positions moving ALOT. :) /i know that's alot of words for you to read, just a few theories I'd like people to comment on if possible

Even for keywords with short lived traffic (trends et al), there are certain categories for which you can be do gradual link building. Your hypothetical example was movies and I can start working on movie based keywords well in advance of the release date. Or it could be a tennis tournament or a baseball game. I can't do that for something like MJ's death though.

I am not sure of the date next to the search result myself. I think its either the date when google indexed the site last or when you clicked on the site through the search results page last. (Were you signed in to your G! account ?)

Its not the number of backlinks or the on page SEO alone that counts... you could search for recent thread on the forums for quality of backlinks and trustrank... they play a major role too.

TBH I've experimented with optimizing pages with irrelevant on-page or no on-page at all for medium competition keywords only using high pr backlinks with keyword in anchor text and guess what, it works beautifully...

I also rank on on page 1 for a few high competition keywords with great details to on-page SEO on all my pages but rubbish backlinks... My domain in that case is a little aged though so I think G! trusts the domain more..

All in all there are lots of factors that need to be considered for you to rank for any keyword. I think for small to medium comp keywords, you could focus on just one or two factors. But in case of high comp you need the on-page, quality of backlinks, number of backlinks, pr, tr, age etc etc

Seems that dudes initial top rank was short lived as I am now outranking him with my articles and web 2.0's, how long this will go on for though I guess no one knows and only time will tell :).

Guys, I got a quick question do you think that if I began promoting my site say a month in advance of the movie release instead of just 1 week I could hold top 3, and stay there without getting pushed out? :)
