Ive managed to get quite a few videos onto page 1 of Google but have never worked out why apart from using views and likes etc. Is there anyway to look at the code of a page and see if there is anything that might indicate a video would get shown. Are there any sort of clues?

Just optimise keywords buy a few cheap likes and high retention views and you should rank in a low competition search. There is no special code just trial and error

Backlinks are still important, even though Google owns YouTube. So along with the views and likes, don't forget to do this.

No, there is no secret code you can check on a YouTube video page. Any video that is listed as public could turn up in Google Search for the right term - it just depends on the usual list of metrics (backlinks, title, keywords on page, views, age of video, etc).
