Say for example, I'm targeting a particular model of golf club from Company Z. The competition is weak, with all the Top 10 sites having less than 50 backlinks.

However, the No.1 spot is currently the official sites' sub-page for that model of golf club. Is it possible to outrank that page with a fully optimized website AND more than 100 backlinks at least?

    Thanks for the confirmation!

When you say official, like the brand name of the club is in the domain?

    Yes.

    It would be like:

    hxxp://www.companyz.com/golfclubs/model.html

If it truly is weak it could be possible - check out dunlop the maker of golf balls - if you search of dunlop balls they come up fourth, however if you search for dunlop golf they come up first - guess it depends on exact keywords you are targetting but would assume you could get first

If you are targeting the keyword in the actual domain it may be harder, but sub domains are not as strong.

So this is possible. I'm targeting the actual model name(more niche-y), whereas the No.1 is a sub-page.

Is it OK to register and develop a website with the actual model name as domain name? E.G hxxp://www.modelname.com/

Does it infringe any copyright issues?

If it does, how to overcome this problem?

Most of the times companies do not get mad unless they have certain affiliate rules stating that their product name can't be used, however sometimes if you outrank their actual main site they get a bit annoyed cause your then cutting into their profit unnecessarily.

As far as copyright issues you'll probably get a take down notice at the most and then you would just have to...um...take it down...:)

Then if they send you a take down notice you could make a deal to sell the site to them since it's doing so well! :cool2:

Just make sure there is a way to email you on the site so if they want to send a notice you'll actually get it and be able to act accordingly.

    Hope that helps...

Yes it can happen in obscure cases. I was going to initiate thread to tell my lucky story but it fits right in this thread. I was getting hits/sales to my affiliate account for a vendor and I didn't know where they were coming from. I have a site for a personal service that I offer and I sell a few things on the side but it wasn't coming from those links. Just by sheer luck I found that one of my anchor texts for this affiliate was ranking number one in Google for that anchor/KW phrase and the official site is shown as a sublink to it. Go figure. (The vendor's name nor any other brand name is in the anchor.)

It's possible in some cases, but not likely since you'll be competing against an or THE authority site in that niche. But have certainly seen it done for product launches from the gurus, but that's a bit different.

I was paying more per keyword with Adwords than the company who's product I was selling, and my CPA network issued me a warning and told me to lower my bid or get cut off completely.

I imagine it would be the same, that is if you were using some type of affiliate, they'd just contact who was paying you and threaten to cut them off.

If you're buying their product off the radar and not dropshipping or affiliate selling, then who knows!

I don't know what goog is like these days but back in the early 2000's I ranked in the top ten and usually above the mfrs site for a number of products I sold on my e-commerce site. These were nutritional supplements. I would think these days it's more difficult but I'm sure it's still done.

yea, this happens all the time with clickbank products. (like, ALL the time :p)

the only way google can even tell which site is "official" is that maybe their domain name is a better match for the keyword. you can still out-seo them on every single other factor google looks for. :D

If I were to answer this quickly, YES it's possible. And sometimes, it's easy to outrank these kind of sites.

But even if you don't, or couldn't, top 3 or top 5 of the first page of Google is gonna bring you hell lotss of traffic too!
