I want to rank some homestay for my client. But Airbnb dominate those keyword. Is it possible to outrank them?

Or it will be better if I'm targeting long tail keyword ?

Yes it is very possible, it all depends on the effort you give. However, focusing on long tail keywords is a must for ranking difficult keyworks. Not only will you bring in initial traffic, but you will be building the link profile towards acquiring those hard keywords. Focus long tail for the short term and high competition for the long term.

To outrank the big giant companies like Airbnb you have to rank for short tail keywords, having high search volume + these website invest large chunks of money into their PR, Buzz creation and branding so, if you have a lot amount of money to invest in these then sure you can beat them!

If you actually research how Air BnB marketed themselves they did a lot of blackhat stuff in their early days so they could outrank sites like booking.com

They had 9 months of money and had to be profitable at the end of that period or they were going to go out of business.

They used blackhat SEO that you can see on ahrefs (and still run some dodgy stuff here) but they also scraped craigslist to actually get people to list their rooms/homes on AirBnB in the first place.

well, for checking some of them out, it seams the "listings" bomb their sites themself with backlinks, comment, gbooks, links, whatsover.

I say yes, but you have to be extremely niche.

I doubt with previous churn an burn method, that may not get any weight in ranking for 2017. Even those eyeing for med keywords, they have been struggling as I can see. It looks like something like blackhat SEO costs have been spiraling upwards now, with more expensive methods needed to get ranked and go against big sites.
