Before I get flamed: I know that Alexa rank is not a reliable tool to judge traffic, but it's a decent tool to get a ballpark figure.

I see a lot of websites on Flippa claiming thousands of uniques per month, yet their Alexa rank is 3 million, 5 million, or even higher. I've always assumed that their traffic claims are just bullsh*t, but they seem to be getting plenty of bids and no-one seems to be challenging them on it.

Is it really possible that they genuinely have traffic, or was I right in my original assumption?

If you go to alexa.com and enter the url that your are inquiring about, it will def show if there is traffic or not. The more traffic you have the less your alexa rank is, in terms of a number, I generate close to 500 unique visits a day and my rank is around 1,200.000 just to give you an example :) all the best hope that helps :)

I have a blog that has an alexa rank close to 5 million and it gets 14k UV hits a month. Alexa picks up a site if enough people are going to it because a portion of those people have to have that toolbar of theirs installed in order for Alexa to detect a site in the first place. Do you have that toolbar installed? neither do I so what does that tell you? a crap load of people have to go to your site for a portion of them to have that toolbar.

You could be get 10k hits a day and still be ranked high in alexa.

It all depends on who has downloaded the toolbar and visits your site.

Yeah ... the toolbar is key but doesn't tend to effect everyone more or less to the same -- or at least a very similar -- degree?

if those 10K hits are real visitors you will see that in Alexa. Alexa is not accurate by far but it has some use as a traffic sampler. I see a lot of people on flippa selling sites that they claim get 15-20K hits UV a month but then I check their Alexa rank and it has a big fat "No Data" INSTANT RED FLAG hahaha....

Alexa rank is extremely unreliable, because most average folks do not install their toolbar - which is what sends them the visit signal.
So websites that attract webmasters and web developers get higher rank because those are the folks that have the toolbar on when they visit.

There is a large misconception that Alexa only gathers information from their unpopular and rarely installed Alexa toolbar.

Alexa gathers their information from thousands of different toolbars. Alexa would have been out of business a long time ago if it only gathered information from their Alexa toolbar. Alexa is a very good 3rd party measurement of traffic. The shortcoming is you have no measurement of the quality of traffic.

After you own and build a lot of websites you can spot traffic numbers that don't match Alexa very quickly. 3k a month in uniques should have the site under 3M is my generic rule. I've never owned a site that didn't reach that number easily from real traffic.

When looking at Flippa traffic you need to particularly study the time on site and bounce rate. I can't tell you have many sites I've seen claiming $300-$500 a month in revenue and the traffic says average time on site is 4 seconds. Complete scam. If the bounce rate is over 40% be highly suspicious as well.
