We all know the harder the niche/keyword the more we see link buying. I'm starting to enter more competitive niches. During my backlink research.... I'm seeing all kinds of paid, high PR homepage type links. Is it possible to compete with our current methods or is it more of a "if you can't beat em', join em'"?

2 months ago yes...with the help of BMR/ALN/etc you could dominate the SERPs, now a lot of sites using those methods are -50 or deindexed. Best way to go now is either paid links, guest posts, manual high PR comments, etc.
Gotta go more "grey hat" now to compete with the big dogs.

You should have a better advantage, then them especially being bought traffic links. Just make sure you associate with related high PR sites.

Especially google changing these days with panda updates, you have a better chance.

You can absolutely compete. You still need to build backlinks creatively, but (excuse the cliche), if you're in it for the long haul, having a site with good content will win out.

Those that buy backlinking services themselves won't be penalized, but usually sites that do this don't have the best material offered. If you're building something of quality and have faith in the system cleaning house and removing blatant spammers, and it has been getting better, you'll see your rankings increase "naturally."

You can do it.. ! You just need to apply the right strategy.. ! I got a client with on furniture niche.. One of his biggest competitor is buying Links in bulk. It's hard to keep them at bay but for 80% of the keywords we are #1 and they are #2. Just do your regular SEO.. Remember, Link Velocity, Anchor diversity, and Relevancy are your 3 Mega Weapons..

Build a social media campaign to start as this is where the trend is moving towards. Get media content on your site too.

You will end up having to buy some high PR backlinks, or you can work something out in terms of a link exchange or something with the owners of high PR blogs in your niche. Build your site's PR up and offer to have their link on your site too. Write some content for them.
