I notice wikipedia as #1 site on many keyword search terms. I'm sure many of you have seen this.

How easy is it to beat wikipedia? They tend to have a lot of links and huge authority/relevency.

Is it possible? Is it worth the effort?

I believe it is possible, i too have seen sites rank above wiki, however even if you rank below wiki at #2 you should still get your traffic.

It is possible but it is keyword dependent. If you want to outrank wiki on a large keyword Google found in its text it shouldn't be too difficult but if you want to outrank wikipedia on a primary keyword (one that has a lot of text inside and not just a paragraph) may be next to impossible especially if it is highly cited (as many of its articles are). Standard competition checks should tell you about your chances..

I'm not really professional on SEO or anything but yes , I've seen alot of websites ranked above Wikipedia but getting ranked higher than Wiki might be kinda hard but as long as you do your researches and if you think that it worths trying , why not ?

By the way , Wikipedia content it's editable so try to add your twists and use that ;) !

My competitor is outranking Wikipedia for a huge keyword. He has backlinks from major news outlets and lots of articles.

Almost everything is possible just a bit harder and takes more time, since i am a newbie i tend to stay away from wikipedia sites, they usually have a high pr and many links so its not worth to do if you dont have the time and energy for it
