Is it penalized if you make a bunch of adsense sites with the same theme/layout/etc?

I'm talking CONFIRMED sources (either for or against), not rumors or stupid shit you read from some noob here or in a WSO that was rewritten by some dbag who just rewrote some other dbag's WSO that was full of wrong info in the first place (eg. every WSO).

What I'm talking about is say you create a website and put Adsense on it.

Then you use that as a template and build x more sites of different subjects but using the same layout (code, WP theme, whatever).

Does Google go "holy crap, these sites are all copies (even tho they all have unique content), we're gonna penalize them!" or does Google say "hey, these are cool sites with unique info, no problem here!"

I have a hunch that there's nothing wrong with it, but I'm wondering if anyone has any confirmed knowledge one way or another.

I didn't do any hardcore testing on this, but I found I had a few sites using a lesser known adsense theme and they were all doing pretty good, then I switched to that stupid X-factor green adsense theme everyone was using and all the sites dropped. It could be from worse coding of the theme, but I think google doesn't like clone site themes that a bunch of people are using. I would recommend making small changes to any theme copy if you can.

Not exactly what you were asking, but hopefully somewhat relevant.

well now if google only cared about the look, think logically, wordpress. how many people use the themes on wordpress? guaranteed at least 10% of WP sites have the same theme as another then the WP Themes section wouldnt be there and wed all be charged for themes lol
Google could give a rats-ass about themes they just care about content pretty much

    Just my advice.
Logic is the key to success

Having unique theme sure is a plus point for seo imho.
I have legit Thesis theme license and modify it fro each and every site that I make.
Another option is Artisteer, its a desktop app to produce wp themes with point-and-click interface.
I think both have been cracked and available in BHW.

I know there are lots of people on the internet that use the same theme, but they're not all on the same IP and using the same Adsense ID. That's what I was talking about.

I don't think the theme will be a big deal unless you are using a crappy theme, that have allot of java and flash, cuz robots like the simple themes.
There is allot of free themes in my opinion better than paid themes, and I'm using free themes for all of my websites one of them getting 30K per day.
You ranking will drop not cuz you switched for the stupid XFactor theme, but cuz you changed the face of your website, so robots tray to recognize it again, that's why if you switched back to the old theme your ranking will rise again. So if your website doing well don't do such a stupid thing and change a theme even if you brought a $1K theme, it will drop in ranking. If Google like it, keep it :)
And about your question, I think you won't get penalize unless you are doing something fishy so Google will track all those websites as a footprint and take them down. But anyway I think you should chose a nice theme to each website up to the niche itself, I don't think one theme will work with different niches, but anyway Google don't care, just don't bother his robots and make them crawl you website well with a robot friendly theme.

I have been using clickbump engine, and my sites have been doing well around page 1. I wouldn't be surprised if using a unique header image gives your site more credibility to G. I have not seen any of the xsite pro themes on the first page in a long time. I think there's a footprint they've picked up on.

I used to run a bunch of proxies with Adsense ads, they all had the same theme and even more or less the same text and Google paid me each and every month.
