My experience: Yes and no, depends on a song and an artist. I got plenty of videos removed and 1 website shut down because I posted some music. The worst that can happen they will block your video worldwide I guess. I got my website shut down ( I had it in a description of my video) because YT reported me to my host and they had some copyright issues with my website. so I had to promise them I remove the copyright content and I got it back....but wasted 2 days on it...

Even if content is currently copyrighted, its specific presentation may fall under fair use and not require authorization by its originator. In its beginning and massive growth period, YT was structured to be, by default, a fair use medium (short videos, presented for commentary or news purposes, with the ability to use parody, etc), making the site an oasis for defacto public domain use. After Google took over, it rapidly folded to the draconian, omni control freak IP mentality of the media corporations, who insist that all content should perpetually NOT ever be considered under fair use.

So YT installed scripts that, depending on how insistent the company is, will flag an upload for being a violation, regardless of details about the presentation of the content. Under the law, it can fall under fair use, but by default, the software will trigger 'copyright violation.' There are some workarounds, like carefully wording the title and description so as to not trigger the algo, or speeding up the video slightly and/or altering the pitch to avoid detection. That, plus using parody and annotative commentary, should keep your uploads out of trouble.

So many people use copyrighted music in their videos.
You risk getting your videos down by youtube when the artist complains, and your account gets strikes. on 3 strikes your account will be suspended.

I had a video flagged, but they just put ads on it and blocked it in a few small countries. I think to make it easier they just get a license from the studio's and pay them a % of the ad revenue, even if its not from their account.
